Mosque at Ground Zero

Turns out all this kerfuffle was over nothing...

Quote from: "Slate Magazine"Bill Kristol may win this round. On Wednesday, the conservative columnist stated plainly, "There will be no thirteen-story mosque near Ground Zero." He's probably rightâ€"not because the political panic-mongering is going to shut the project down, but because it's going to collapse under the weight of its planners' incompetence. Politico reports that the Cordoba Project hasn't even begun raising money for the project. The group needs about $100 million; it has $18,255. It also lacks "even the most basic real estate essentials," like a blueprint, an architect, and an engineer. The group's spokesman says that while they might build the cultural center with foreign money, they would prefer to use domestic funds. But "currently, they have none of either." And they're not likely to come up with much, either in the way of cash or professional expertise, with their project in the middle of a political flame war. Even a source who Politico described as a "prominent supporter of the project" is less than impressed. "This is amateur hour," he said. "That's why the idea that this is some big conspiracy is so silly. You could say this is not a well-oiled machine."

Hmm.  Almost makes you wonder which source broke this story originally, and why.

I'm all for the building of this mosque.  To me, it makes no sense to punish a majority for the sins of a few extremists.  Muslims have every right to celebrate their faith the same way a Christian or a Jew or any other person of another faith would.  To discriminate against them is not only illegal, but bigoted as well.  If anything, I'd be happy to see them take a stand and show that they don't agree with the actions of those terrorists who organized 9/11, and show Americans how true Muslims worship.

On a semi-related note, both inappropriate and maybe a little funny, my friend's dad said, Well, they let Catholics build churches near playgrounds, don't they?  :P

An excellent opinion article about the Burn Quaran Day.  Just imagine all this over a building in downtown New York.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/OPINION/08/20/ahmed.quran.burning/index.html?hpt=Mid

The author makes good points of tolerance and understanding and intolerance.  Rather I should say he pleading for tolerance. He sheds light on a cause for concern as this is a slippery slope.  The pastor is now suggesting a day for burning the Talmud.

This is something that physically disgust me.  The name of the church where this burning will take place?

Dove World Outreach Center

Disgusting.

The act itself is one thing, a freedom of expression, but to stand behind a sign that says "Dove World Outreach Center", and flagrantly display an act that runs completely counter of the name of the place of worship (or rather I should say rule over) is purely disgusting.

Disgusting is far too kind of a word.

It's completely disrespectful. If anything they should build a church so family's of victims can pray.

There are already two churches right across from ground zero and one of them is Catholic. This community center would be two blocks away, not even visible from the site. It doesn't look as though it's going to be built anywhere but I find what you have said to be disrespectful to the peaceful muslims who condemn the actions of those you are likening them to, by not discerning between the radicals and the moderates whatsoever.

Who is this "they" you speak of?  The terrorists?  They're dead.  Muslims in general?  Be careful of your ground, then.  You, as a Catholic, could by the same logic be called a supporter of pedophilia.

It's completely disrespectful to assume that everyone who lost someone in 9/11 is of a faith that prays in churches, or of any faith at all.

At least at a community center, there are ways to make use of your time that are productive and beneficial.  Giving people a place to pray is like giving people a place to waste effort.

An excellent point here.

But the Muslim God is the correct God, in the eyes of Muslims, so why should they build a church?

Hmm, someone hasn't ready anything in the thread in which he/she just posted.

What is disrespectful about building a place of worship wherever it may be?  How is a group of Muslims who wish to erect this center disrespect9/11, when they had nothing to do with 9/11 in the first place?
