I don't dance and am a bar hugger myself but it's not because I see it as being "gay" or whatever other descriptive people use for it, I just can't dance and never learned to.  I opted to learn a musical instrument instead of dancing.  I'll try if I'm asked because I really don't care if I look like an idiot to other people or not I just feel bad when I step on my partner's toes or accidentally elbow them in the sternum  

Dancing is actually a huge thing here (in rural South Texas at least) but I have no clue or really any want to learn how to two step or do the electric slide or whatever is done on the sawdusted dance floors.  Moshing...now that's a different story...

Yes I am a reasonably accomplished American dancer.  There are huge benefits for having some acquaintence with ballroom type dancing. Most men, especially younger men, regard dancing as a sissy pursuit. What they do not know, or believe when you tell them, is that they would not last 10 minutes of fast dancing such as the swing, Jive, paso doble, vienese waltz and others. It is a very athletic pusuit and some of the very best athletes are dancers. You have to try it to believe the physical demands.

When I was single I would go to dances and leave with as many women as I cared to squire around. The girls seem to equate dancing competance with romantic excellence. I did not go to dances for the express purpose of connecting with the girls. I did it because it was, and is, great fun. Outside of saloon dancing it is a civilized activity where many people enjoy themselves thoroughly.

One of, but not the only, the reason that I became an staunch atheist is connected to dance. The preacher in the local church insisted that dancing was a  direct influence from the devil. He asured one and all that "dancing is a vertical expression of a horizontal desire".  This is typical of baptist and taliban claims alike.

Does it have anything to do with nationality?

No.  It's genetic in my case.  

Mine too. 6'6", 360 pounds. I'm a head taller and a half again bigger than everyone else in the room. The dance floor is typically at the center, whereas I am not. I stick to the outskirts. Saves me from feeling clustered in with regular sized people. Because I'm bigger, my bubble is bigger.
