So it looks like some people out there believe the LHC may uncover how to use hyper drive. Thoughts?

Traveling to the stars is a nice thought. But... let's say we can go the speed of light, or Warp speed. It would still take 4 years one way to reach the nearest star. Inside of our solar system, slowing down from Warp Speed would be energy consumptive, and the dangers may outweigh the benefits of being able to get to the sun in 9 minutes, for example.

If interstellar travel is ever going to be feasible, I believe that the technology that will get us there isn't invented or even thought of yet. That said, if this Felber guy doesn't turn out to be completely off his rocker, than this just may be the first of many visionary steps towards Warp speed.

True, still have to start off somewhere. You know how humans typically do when it comes to technology. Invent something mindblowing, derive something even more mindblowing from it and it goes on and on until we find something new to play with. I'm sure something like this could have other uses other than traveling faster than light and besides, there is no telling how fast  it could be IF it even works out how he wants it to work out. 4 years is most certainly WAY faster than what it would take to travel that far now.

Very true. However, there is currently issues over whether humans can survive the harshness of isolated travel, within nearly arms reach of the rest of the crew, sans gravity for the 18 months it would take to get to Mars. A lot on the human aspect would have to be figured out before a 4 year trip were possible. It excites me to think that there are plans to go to Mars. Obviously, it is the next logical step in our space faring.

Not to mention, I bet the acceleration to Warp 1 does a number on the body. The G force must be incalculable.

Unless there was a way to counter the G-force all that would be left of you would be a splat on the wall.

So we need to figure a way to manipulate the force of gravity? Isn't that easier said than done?

LoneMateria

Almost everything is easier said then done.  Fighter pilots have to wear G-suits to stop them from blacking out during combat.  How many 'G's do you think we will pull getting close to the speed of light?  They don't have to operate at supersonic speeds to pull a few 'G's.  I'm sure once we gain an even better understanding of gravity (like how to artificially create it) then we should theoretically be able to cancel out its effects.  Who knows how far off in the future that is though.

Indeed,I hope it's soon though.

I say we fix the problems home on earth before we take them to space.  I feel like we would end up like the old game StarLancer where we are essentially fighting the Russians for control of the Solar System.  Either that or the majority of the atheist community and anyone else who is science related can move underground or to one specific region where we can focus on advancing science, building new technologies and bringing peace to the world.

I say first thing we do is figure out how to protect ourselves from attacks and radiation from nuclear weapons, maybe create a way to neutralize a weapon while its still in the air.  Then intergalactic travel is number 2 ^_^

True, true. Hopefully they'll just disarm everyone like Obama pledged at the UN. Unlikely I know but it's a happy thought still. If the world does come to an end though I do hope there is an atheist bunker we could all go to and start over with a clean slate to ensure a better future.

I really, really, really hope someone says "engage" right as they turn it on.
I want bad people to look forward to and celebrate the day I die, because if they don't, I'm not living up to my potential.

Ultima22689

haha, you know they will. I can see it now, probably will be Gordon Freeman.

LoneMateria

Engage or Make it so?  I'm such a freaking loser lol.  How about as a joke, "Warp factor 6 Mr. Sulu".

ha, I don't think they would say make it so, someone would have to go

"Scientist 1: Proceeding to warp 8"

"Scinetist 2: Make it so number one"

And I don't care what anyone says Captain Picard is nothing but win and Chuck Norris would collapse on the floor from his mad diplomacy skillz and if he needed to he would just have Worf beat the snot out of him. If that fails, you don't want to see the captain put on his sporty jacket (you know which one i'm talking about)
