Heretical Rants

Hello!

My atheist story is short.

I don't think I've ever really believed in any kind of deity, but at some point the fear aspects of religion got to me (I was quite young and malleable).  I claimed myself agnostic to avoid the wrath of the invisible man that many of my relatives believe in, some to the point of giving their lives away to him.   I even was a little bit into the "make your own religion" stuff for a while, though I was mostly joking about it.

A few years ago I decided that agnosticism was crap, just like the rest of it.   If you make outrageous claims it's your responsibility to give evidence for them.  The old, "You can't prove that there isn't a god, there isn't any evidence either way," argument simply doesn't hold up.  My father still thinks it does; I claimed some mystical bullshit and he ate it right up when presented with the famous "You can't prove that it isn't."  He still devoutly follows his own religion of "There are those that know.  I don't know who they are, or what they know, but they know it... and someday you will know too."
He is referring to some kind of theistic knowledge. I'm still not sure at what point in his life he made that up, or why he has accepted it as truth.

I stand (or type) before you today an antitheist.  This makes many people angry, but I can't accept anything else.

If anyone asks me about religion now I simply tell them, "I am God."
We, of course, create our own reality.  We are all re-creating ourselves right now, through our thoughts and perceptions.

We don't have to bring a madman creator of questionable origins into the equation.

I still preach the Flying Spaghetti Monster and Invisible Pink Unicorn, just as I have since I was a wee lad... only now I don't ever look up at the sky and stutter blessings to the heavens.

Welcome to the forum. I like the label "antitheist." I'll make sure to add it to the other 10 or so that I use for myself....

Us folks from non-religious families can't really hold our heads as high in this forum :p . We just did what came naturally to us. Its those who come from deeply religious families, that I particularly admire.

So this ones on me, brother in...er...opposition to religion

I am just curious on how this applies to me coming from a non-religious family to being a Christian?  :hide2:  lol

You at least had the ability to make the choice on your own (hopefully) without too much external influence.  So in a way, (in my opinion) your faith is of a better quality than that of those who are religious more because of peer pressure and habit than an actual conscious choice.

WOW! hi god, we've been wondering about you forever--welcome to the forum.
FSM is a great pro evolution and pro pretend-pirate sect. As a  lacto ovo vegetarian. I prefer the creamy Alfredoists schism to the big meaty balls mainstream.
There's nothing wrong with ambivalence--is there?

I'm sort of halfway on that.  I did go to churches when I was younger, but that was just because my mum wanted me to decide what my beliefs were on my own.  My dad's side of the family is uubercatholic: he didn't like the fear aspect, that drove him away from it, and he still doesn't know what he believes.  He spends an hour or so in deep meditation every day, so he is probably in a continued state of alpha consciousness... and I do think he believes in Jesus.

UPDATE:
After some very indirect questioning, I got my dad to say:
QuoteI've studied all the different religions, and they all have value, but NONE of them have got the whole story.
He then put his fist down on table and gestured that he had said all that needed to be said.
