I know i know, you're all going to tell me how futile this is, but i just had to share. This stuff is comedy gold.

I've had a couple of email exchanges with this guy. He's been doing the usual - telling me i'm brainwashed and glossing over any pertinent answer i have for his ridiculous questions. At one point he made some hilarious claims about how the sun is shrinking (it used to be the size of the Earth's current solar orbit don'tcha know) and that the Earth's magnetic field is only 30,000 years old! I, of course, asked him for his sources of reference. The below is his response:

------------------------------

Magnetic field:

Are you not a fundamentalist closed to any rational enquiry? Outside of what you have been indoctrinated to believe, there can be no rational thought, or am I wrong?

Ok I've given you two sources for my argument, I'm interested if you will even give them the credit that they deserve. Of course your not going to find this material in a scientific journal, the people that write those journals are vehemently opposed to any such suggestions for a young earth. That's not science by the way, that is a soviet style way of teaching (indoctrination). I would challenge you to honestly look into the cases where a professor who has, by his own investigation, come to the conclusion that this must be a young earth. I would challenge you to see what happens to those individuals. They are treated as outsiders. Crazies. In the Soviet Union if a teacher stood up in class and said, "I believe capitalism is a better economic model than communism". That teacher would be sent to Siberia! You've got the same thing happening now here in the United States. If a professor stands up and says,"I think creation and a young earth is a better explanation for how we got here". That professor is sent to academic Siberia. This is not what I would expect from the scientific community! Is not science supposed to look at and consider ALL options? Unfortunately we have a lot of pseudo-scientists out there pushing their evolutionary theory on the masses such as yourself. And people like you don't even consider anything else, other better options. Creation is more logical, creation lines up with the evidence that we have today. Everything points to a Creator.

But lets keep our argument on topic, I would like for you to address the two issues of the magnetic field and the sun shrinking. Honestly, tell me how life can be supported 200 thousand years ago when we equate the FACT that the sun is shrinking by .1% per year? It's a very simple question.

---------------------------------------------------------------

I'd like to hear what you guys have to say about this. I haven't yet looked through all the links but they are from the same creationist website. You are all more than welcome to write a direct response to this guy. I'll more than happily forward them to him :)

Uhm, if the sun is shrinking by .1% every year, that makes that in 1000 years it will be... gone?

Oh.. oh, god.. the stupid... it burns...

It is not always impossible to debate a creationist, but generally the ones that have read a staggering amount of creationist apologetics are difficult nuts (pun intended) to crack. They reject all scientific evidence out of hand because they believe that the scientific establishment is conspiring against them, and they expect you to take all of their lunatic apologetics as absolute truth, or you're being unreasonable and closed-minded.

People like this need an exceptional amount of attention to reach even slightly, and since they reject evidence and reason off hand, and are so distrustful, it is best to first earn their favour and respect, before attempting to really dig in to what they believe.

Personally, I don't have the time to do that, and I only bother debating creationists when other people are around, because a third party creationist reading it is far more likely to be convinced than my antagonist in the debate.

Maybe the Earth is shrinking by .1% every year as well, which means we won't notice or be affected.

As long as we are shrinking.

Mercury, how were you not swallowed by the sun's gravitational force when it was larger?!

This person is using 'creation science' from an organization that just recently failed to gain accreditation as a valid issuer of master's degrees in science from Texas.  Not to offend the many Texans on this board, but my feeling is that if they were actually practicing science at the ICR, then Texas would have been more than happy to have given them accreditation. I think the fact that they were uncuccessful in Texas, of all places, speaks volumes.

I wrote a couple of paragraphs exploring the difference between the scientific community and a dictatorship, and then decided that I had simply wasted 20 minutes. :|

As for the shrinking sun idea, you might find some of the information presented at this site to be of use, but I think you know already that no matter what evidence you give this person, they'll simply discount it as the workings of the vast 'anti-creationist conspiracy' by scientists.

I'm glad you're getting a kick out of your interaction with this misguided individual, and it's true that the accusations of 'fundamentalism' and illogic that they put forth come within hailing distance of amusing, but I guess we have different ideas of what constitutes 'comedy gold'.

When I was young, I believed that Jesus was a hippie, a commie and probably gay as well.  I always wondered why that guy is so immensely popular with right wing conservatives.
