This is a general knowledge test that I devised to determine one's cultural literacy. It's not meant to be taken seriously, though some of the questions are insanely difficult.  :devil:

1)Mephisto : X :: Faust : Pilgrim

2)Who was william the conquerer and what did he do?

3)What was the main reason for William the conquerer's victory?

4)Shogun : X :: Empereror : God

5)What is a pidgin, and how does one form?

6)What was the main conflict between C.G. Jung's psychology and Freud's?

7)Why were the irish historically regarded as leprechauns?

8)What is the historical definition of a leprechaun?

9)What was known in ancient china as the "yang essence"?

10)Philology is the ancient art of reading what?

12)What does socrates refer to himself as during his trial, and what does he propose his punishment to be?

13)Who was the dictator of chile during the 1930's?

14)buddhism : suffering :: mysticism : X

15)What is the etymology of "hissy fit"?

*Bonus*)How are the native american tribe of the Hopi's foundational myths similiar and different from the foundational myths of the Aztecs?

Scoring: Give yourself 1 point for each question you can correctly answer.

0-3 points = You are retarded. Stay in school! :shock:
7-9 points = You are merely obtuse. Perhaps you can make it to your HS graduation. Right? :|
13-15 points = Not bad. You could get a masters degree. If you study.  :D

comments? Discussion, commence.  :crazy:

[spoiler:1fv6f06e]He was a king of England that invaded to get his crown. I believe he was the last to ever invade England.[/spoiler:1fv6f06e]

I have no idea.
Quote from: "Wechtlein Uns"6)What was the main conflict between C.G. Jung's psychology and Freud's?

Quote from: "Wechtlein Uns"7)Why were the irish historically regarded as leprechauns?
They were? I didn't know that.
Quote from: "Wechtlein Uns"8)What is the historical definition of a leprechaun?
I thought it was a male fairy from Ireland, but judging by the mention of a historical definition, I suspect that the leprechaun of today is only a commercialized version of something else from Irish lore or history.

No clue. Maybe snakes?
Quote from: "Wechtlein Uns"*Bonus*)How are the native american tribe of the Hopi's foundational myths similar and different from the foundational myths of the Aztecs?
I dunno.

How do I determine my score? I guessed on a few.

Willravel, your score was three. the philology question was a typo on my part, so you automatically got that one right.

Suffice to say... you are, sadly, retarded.  :rant:

Wecht, if you are going to post questions, at least make sure you have the answers right.

William was duke of normandy, not king of france.

The fatigue of the soldiers was a factor in Williams victory, but more significant was the poor discipline of the fyrd. After an ineffective cavalry charge led to a retreat, the fyrd broke ranks to pursure and compromised the integrity of the sheild wall. Once the militia were in the open, they were run down by cavalry, leaving too few men on the hill to form an effective defense.

Another contributaory factor were the untimley death of harold.

Edit, pinochet is wrong as well, he took over leadership in the 1970's some time.

Mister Joy

1)Mephisto : X :: Faust : Pilgrim
[spoiler:3bjx9uq7]I'm not sure what the question is. Erm... Malmoth the Wanderer? Dunno.[/spoiler:3bjx9uq7]

2)Who was william the conquerer and what did he do?
[spoiler:3bjx9uq7]When "The Confessor" (a King who's actual name I forget) died, Harold (I think it was Harold, I'm going largely on a vague memory of Simon Schama documentaries here) claimed that he'd pointed at him on his death bed. This gesture was widely interpreted as naming 'Harold' successor, so he became king. However William, a Norman, claimed that "The Confessor" had verbally named him heir to the crown years ago, which led to his outrage and invasion of England. Harold was killed and William became king.[/spoiler:3bjx9uq7]

3)What was the main reason for William the conquerer's victory?
[spoiler:3bjx9uq7]All I can remember is that he had the high ground (unless I'm confusing it with some other battle). He also had the Pope's plessings, not that it counts.[/spoiler:3bjx9uq7]

4)Shogun : X :: Empereror : God
[spoiler:3bjx9uq7]King?[/spoiler:3bjx9uq7]

5)What is a pidgin, and how does one form?
No idea. I'm thinking "pidgin English" but I'm assuming that's something else.

6)What was the main conflict between C.G. Jung's psychology and Freud's?
Don't know.

7)Why were the irish historically regarded as leprechauns?
Ah! I'm not doing very well.

8)What is the historical definition of a leprechaun?
Nope.

10)Philology is the ancient art of reading what?
[spoiler:3bjx9uq7]Classical literature, I think.[/spoiler:3bjx9uq7]

12)What does socrates refer to himself as during his trial, and what does he propose his punishment to be?
I knew this! But I don't anymore.

13)Who was the dictator of chile during the 1930's?
No.

14)buddhism : suffering :: mysticism : X
No.

15)What is the etymology of "hissy fit"?
That's obscenely obscure!

I'll pass on the bonus.

Will

I went and researched a bi.
Quote from: "SSY"William was duke of normandy, not king of france.
This is true.
Quote from: "SSY"The fatigue of the soldiers was a factor in Williams victory, but more significant was the poor discipline of the fyrd. After an ineffective cavalry charge led to a retreat, the fyrd broke ranks to pursure and compromised the integrity of the sheild wall. Once the militia were in the open, they were run down by cavalry, leaving too few men on the hill to form an effective defense.
And that's not all. I pulled out some old books, and it turns out there are dozens of reasons that the battle turned out the way it did, and among them was the answer I provided. I suspect the best answer would be the cavalry.
Quote from: "SSY"Edit, pinochet is wrong as well, he took over leadership in the 1970's some time.
I knew it!

I was wrong about Mephisto, he wasn't just a demon he was dah debil. The shogun question is a bit more difficult, though. The Emperor was considered to be a god, so the attempt to draw a relationship with the governmental hierarchy and a religious hierarchy is troublesome.

The Freud/Jung thing is a mess. While they agreed on many things, their disagreements were substantial and numerous. And to be honest sexuality and the subconscious was not as substantial a difference as the one I named or the issue of religion between the two.

I can't find anything on the source of leprechauns that's really legitimate enough to cite on a paper so I'll leave it.

Mysticism is a toughy, too. There's not just one flavor of mysticism in the world, just as there's not just one kind of Christianity or voodoo.

Were women really considered crazy for having wombs? I can't find verifiable evidence of that one either.
I want bad people to look forward to and celebrate the day I die, because if they don't, I'm not living up to my potential.

Quote from: "Willravel"I .

I'm sorry, I am going to have to disagree with you, both archers and cavalry were ineffective against the sheild wall, it wasn't until the undisciplined conscripted troops broke ranks that the cavalry could be used effectivley.

The archers were ineffective both becuase the english hunkered down behind their shields and becuase the english were not returning fire, this mean't the normans quickly ran out of ammunition.

The cavalry was also not much use until the shield wall was broken due in part to the steepness of the slope upon which harold had deployed, and also the horses being vulnrable to the large bearded axes of the housecarls.

I said the fyrd pursuing a failed cavalry charge was the main reason he lost the battle becuase it was the one moment where the plan fell apart and a major blow could be struck, up until then, things had been going pretty well for the english troops. had the sheild wall remained in tact, the english could well have won the battle.

I imagine this debate could go on for a while, becuase as you rightly stated, there were many many factors that lead to the defeat of Harold's army, picking a single cause is likley going to be quite difficult.
