New Year's Resolutions

I was just curious about how many people make new Years Resolutions and what you think of the idea.  I usually don't make new years resolutions.  However, this year I have decided to make tomorrow the first day of a diet.  That's just how things worked out since I didn't want to diet during the holidays. I'm wondering if I call it a resolution if I will be better able to stick to the plan or if it will simply make me that more upset with myself if I mess up.

Happy New Year to everyone

I normally just have general thoughts about what I want to accomplish in the next year. I usually feel so overwhelmed when I think about all the ways that my life sucks and could be so much better, that I end up doing nothing.

I think it is funny how every year the health clubs get really busy in early January and then taper off at the end of January.

I don't think I have ever made a resolution tied specifically to the new year, but I occasionally make a resolution to myself when I feel that I'm ready to make some change, regardless of the date.  I don't think making a new year's resolution is a "stupid" idea; it can work for some people.

I make them on occasion, when I know that there's a reasonable chance I can keep them. This year's resolution is to get a more efficient metabolism. I have to eat quite a bit right now due to my workouts, so I'm going to shift my diet in order to get the maximum nutrients from what I eat.
I want bad people to look forward to and celebrate the day I die, because if they don't, I'm not living up to my potential.

I like the idea of giving myself a fresh start each new year. I can be a bit arbitrary about whether the new year falls on my birthday or on New Year's day. I'm not planning to make any resolutions this year, though. Perhaps I'll make some reaffirmations of my current goals, if I feel like it.

I'm guilty of the resolution-making although the "new starts" I'm hoping to put into action are actually just taking back up old habits that, for one reason or another, were put on hold (a couple are new):

1. Regular exercise routine (no diet, just exercise more  ;) )
2. Martial arts practice
3. Working on and recording songs (may look to put a band together again after I graduate)
4. Launch a new website (Not sure if it'll be the second incarnation of the Atheist Coalition or not) and keep it running
5. Start work on my book.

That's pretty much it aside from the stuff I have to do like finish my thesis and graduate this summer.

Quote from: "Wraitchel"I can be a bit arbitrary about whether the new year falls on my birthday or on New Year's day.

My birthday is just a week away so waiting till my birthday is just another excuse to put off whatever it is I plan on doing.  About the time November rolls around I start thinking "oh crap, I had a goal for this year and never got around to it."  Then the holiday stuff hits and I don't have time.  So, the first part of the year is typically a good time for me to reaffirm my goals (or make them a higher priority).

I make resolutions all year long that I don't keep... I don't see why I should choose the arbitrary date of January 1 to make any extra ones.  We ARE starting a new eating/exercise program on Monday, but we seem to do that the beginning of EVERY month, so that's not special at all.  LOL!
