Hi, all  As a child, I was taken to church by my parents. I sat quietly, and listened to the sermons, all the while being confused. I don't know. I just had a VERY strong feeling that I wasn't really welcome, but tolerated. And, as I listened, I heard sermons that I thought were harsh and hard on women. I felt uncomfortable. The sermons made me feel not like a person - but more like an "OTHER". I can best describe it as feeling almost  like women were an alien race, who throughout history have caused trouble for men, and were basically useless (except for having babies).
Perhaps it was my pride, or the fact that my parents had taught me that I was a valuable person, but from an early age, I became offended with what organized religion taught about women  .
I decided way back, that it was stupid to support an institution (religion) that disrespects me. What did I need THAT for? So, I became an Atheist before I even knew that there was a word for how I felt (much less that there was a whole movement of like-minded people).
I am new to this group. Glad to have found you. Thanks.
In life's journey, it's the side trips, that make the memories.

Hello and welcome!

You know, women are useful for oh, so many things besides having babies... Like doing laundry, cooking dinner and washing dishes.

Respect is to be earned, not given freely. However, I find myself giving women a head-start for respect, anyway. They're the stronger sex, after all. I love women. My girlfriend hates that.  ;)

Welcome to the forum, and I couldn't agree with you more.

(Are we really a movement? I hadn't thought about it...)

Hi StarWish624, welcome to the forum.  The treatment of women by bible was the last straw for me when I was trying to figure out if there was a reason to continue attempting to understand Christianity as anything more a religion that should have become popularly known as myth quite some time ago.  I simply cannot accept that having boobs and a vagina instead of a penis somehow makes a human less of a person.

You took the words out of my mouth! How can a believer even attempt to rationalize this, especially a female believer? Yet my very own mother subscribes to this belittling dogma. Sad. She is actually a much stronger and smarter person than my father but she accepts the fact that she must submit to him.

Hopefully your husband is not a muslim.

Islam have such kind of rule:
Quote"When a woman reject her husband for having sex in a night, Angels are cursing her until dusk".

Waw!

I could never understand how any woman in her right mind would want anything to do with the church or bible.Great to see another woman who respects herself.

I think disrespect might be the wrong word.. maybe "denying basic human dignity" would be a better replacement

In many orthodoxchurches here there are still signs on chair saying "man" or "woman". Of course the men chairs are all in the front and the women's seats are on the back. Nowadays though most igore them, but it still shows what the church believes (-ed?) on women.
God made me an atheist, who are you to question his wisdom!

Welcome!

I too hate how woman are treated by religions and how it carries out into secular society, from the right to vote down to the right to have an abortion if one so chooses.  Is there a country on this earth in which that doesn't happen?
