. . . May have already opened a portal into another dimension (or something).

Cue theremin intro.

I found this silly article on a fringe site. Be afraid: the end is nigh (or something).

"Bizarre 'Portal-Shaped Clouds' Form Over CERN During The 'Awake Experiment'"

In case you're wondering what shape a portal is, according to the author, open the spoiler below.

Spoiler

QuoteThere are some "major concerns" about what the scientists at CERN are doing these days.  The European Organization for Nuclear Research, more commonly known by the acronym "CERN", is purposely smashing particles into one another at astonishingly high speeds.  Just last month, the researchers working at the facility began a new experiment called "Awake" that uses "plasma wakefields driven by a proton beam" to accelerate charged particles.  On June 24th, pictures of some extremely bizarre "portal-shaped cloud formations" were taken in the area just above the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.  Could it be possible that there is some sort of a connection between this new "Awake" experiment" and these strange cloud formations?  And precisely what do the researchers hope to "awaken" anyway?

. . .

On top of everything else, the people running CERN decided to choose a logo that seems to contain "666"...

I hope CERN can keep that portal open for awhile, or open it at will -- if Trump wins in November, a few of us may be wanting to jump thru it.

I have no idea why they mess with that thing, but I don't think they're in search of the Higgs boson.

Option 2: Throw Trump through it!

Can you imagine being on the receiving end of Trump? We'd probably see daemons coming through seeking asylum.

Nope, they found that already!  :)

They "mess" with it in search of new knowledge. All for that ,though I do recognise that "new" is not always "good". But, I, and millions of others,  would not be alive if people had not "messed with" human anatomy back when it was frowned upon, even considered evil.

Basic knowledge.

Science and engineering form a virtuous circle. Science creates the basis for better instrumentality which engineering uses to create better instruments which allows science to understand reality better thus creating the basis for better instrumentality etc. etc. etc.

Science is institutionalised curiosity in the same way the religion is institutionalised superstition. Science is as natural to humans as curiosity. Galileo started the 'virtuous circle' when he used lenses to create the first astronomical telescopes and from the knowledge gained put the first nail, the Earth orbits the Sun, in the coffin of superstition.

RE: Science

I think it's odd that scientists are aware of the risks and admit they have no real idea what the outcome of an experiment might be, yet they forge on. We're not in the fifties anymore.

l think that's a generalisation a tad too far, GD.

From my own minor experience in research I know that you don't just A to B to see what happens - from prior knowledge you know that you can expect certain things. Adding and an acid to an alkali causes fizzing - but adding vinegar to baking soda is fairly harmless (and makes a fluffy kind of bread possible) . . . we know that adding battery acid to bleach makes a WMD if in enough quantity. Those reactions can, these days, be predicted precisely because we understand how elements combine preferably and what that leaves over. We can apply that understanding to novel mixtures. Or do it backwards, work out what to mix to achieve a specific outcome.

Bashing sub-atomic bits together is a little more hit or miss I agree. But the known laws of physics (dark mass/energy excepted here) tell us that the total energy out cannot excede the total energy in the system. All the energy in a fusion reaction has existed for as long as the Universe has in its present form - just locked up but easily (some say) calculatable, predictable.

Mass and energy are expressions of the same thing, so not only is the energy predictable but the mass of any created particles as well. Either lots of light energetic ones or fewer heavy, sleepy jobs - or a mix -  if I understand it. You have to put more energy in to bash the lazy jobs out. And even more to smash them into smithereens, to see what they are made of.

But, despite the cubic acres of complex and tough gubbins needed merely to maintain thevright environment, give enough shove and track/catch any bits, we are talking about super-sub-microscopic amounts of mass with each shot.

Advisory: this is only based on memory after reading and listening over several years and should not be taken as authorative.  :D

There are very few mad scientists left alive with funding!

The key thing to remember is that nothing happens in the LHC that does not happen in stars all the time, the processes are not unnatural. Another point is that the amount of materiel collided in the LHC is minuscule while in stars it's happening 24/7 at the megaton level. To use a French expression comparing the LHC to the Sun is the same as taking a piss in the sea.

And the fact is that the LHC means we don't have to behave like we did in the 50's any more. We have infinitely better control of what's happening and we have sophisticated computer models to run before experiments are even designed. The LHC is safe.

It's all them particules what's spoiling the weather.  You mark my words. Stands to reason, you can't have all them particules flying about without it gets in the way of the sunshine.
