Hello Folks,

After many months of inactivity I'm back again. It took me 3,5 months to get a DSL connection in my new home. I couldn't access this forum from work either, since they blocked this site.

Anyway I'm happy to be back again.

Cheers,

Tom

It's good to have you back.

My work blocks forums too..and ebay, and facebook, and basically any site you really shouldn't be on while at work.

Hey Tom61!  All settled in the DC area (I think it was)?

Hi Laetusatheos,

we're not so restricted at work. For example the company doesn't block amazon or ebay, but most user forums are blocked. Funny thing though is that they don't block every forum. So it looks like they block us randomly.

Hi SteveS,

Latest news is that my wife moved to the DC area today. I'm still wating for my G4-Visum renewal. I'll remain here in Germany till it is clear that my wife would pass her job probation. Then there is still a lot to do before I can move  out, like selling all my stuff, because I can't take everything with me. My wife also left a lot of stuff behind that I'd need to sell for her. If everything goes well I'll move out before the end of this year.

Yeah, that all makes sense.  Hope it all goes as smoothly as possible - sounds like sort of a major pain!

Welcome back, Tom62!  I'm glad your plans to come to the US are moving along.  (I've heard waiting for a visa can be a pain.)

Once you get the all-clear to move to D.C., sell everything that doesn't have sentimental value.  It will make the move much easier.  Although I've never moved across an ocean, I have moved across country three times, so I know how tough a long distance move is.

Keep us posted.  See you around the forum.   :)

The G4 Visum is not so problematic. I'm more worried about getting my Green Card, which I only get if I'm already resident in the US. Basically this means that I've got to quit my job here in Germany. Go to the US and then find a new job as quickly as possible sothat I can apply for the Green Card.

Moving is indeed a pain in the you know where. The last 4 months we had to move so many stuff across cities and countries that I'm sick of it. We moved part goods from our former house in Darmstadt to my new appartment in Oberursel. Some of it went into storage for overseas shipment or was stored at my place for airfreight to the USA. Then the goods of my wife had to go from Lisbon to Germany, again some of it went into storage, other part went to my new appartment which needed to be splitted into airfreight, things that I'd need to sell and things that we take with us ourselves to the USA. Finally we had to merge the German and Portugese stuff together to get it all shipped to the USA by sea and air; and had to make sure that all burocratic institutes were satisfied.

When I move to the US I want to make sure that I don't go throough the same ordeal. So I'll take anything with me that can be packed into two suitcases and handluggage. This means that I've got to get rid of nearly everything that I've got (car, computer, furniture, washing machine, TV, etc. etc.). Luckily my most important possessions (DVD's, books and CD's) are already on their way to Washington DC.

^Sounds like you've had your fair share of moving experience recently.

I like your plan to carry your belongings like a sherpa onto the airplane.  Be ready to pay hefty fees for extra luggage.   You might want to look into shipping rates via DHL or FedEx...since your wife is already in the states that might be a viable option.

Good luck to you, Tom62, and keep us posted.
