Six years after Sister Margaret A. Farley's book on human sexuality was published, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (modern-day successor to the Inquisition) has ruled that it "cannot be used as a valid expression of Catholic teaching, either in counseling and formation, or in ecumenical and interreligious dialogue."

QuoteFrom New York Times | "Vatican Scolds Nun for Book on Sexuality":

The Vatican's doctrinal office on Monday denounced an American nun who taught Christian ethics at Yale Divinity School for a book that attempted to present a theological rationale for same-sex relationships, masturbation and remarriage after divorce.

. . .

In light of the recent crack-down instigated against US nuns (thread here), it seems like this is another sign of a rift which is appearing.
"Religion is fundamentally opposed to everything I hold in veneration — courage, clear thinking, honesty, fairness, and above all, love of the truth."
— H. L. Mencken

The Vatican seems more concerned about masturbation than about priests sexually abusing altar boys. Especially when nuns write about it.

Naturally they are more concerned about masturbation. If alter boys are allowed to masturbate unchecked they might wear out their "tab A" thus depriving some of their priests of the ability of their ability to use them with their "slot B and C". Nuns are supposed to be to innocent to understand this much less right about it.
It appears to me (whether rightly or wrongly) that direct arguments against Christianity and theism produce hardly any effect on the public; and freedom of thought is best promoted by the gradual illumination of men's minds which follows from the advance of science - Charles Darwin

I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the object of his creation, whose purposes are modeled after our own -- a god, in short, who is but a reflection of human frailty. Neither can I believe that the individual survives the death of his body, although feeble souls harbor such thoughts through fear or ridiculous egotism. - Albert Einstein

Religion is a by product of fear. For much of human history, it may have been a necessary evil, but why was it more evil than necessary? Isn't killing people in the name of God a pretty good definition of insanity. - Arther C. Clarke

Faith means not wanting to know what is true. - Friedrich Nietzsche

And right after that happened, the book went from obscure and unknown to a bestseller on Amazon. Who's laughing now?

The Vatican. The Nuns will not be allowed to keep the money.

I guess I know which book I'm putting on my wish list for christmas.  :D
Also, this reminds me of my catholic school days...I was taught human sexuality in the 7th grade by a nun...it was very factual and awkward.

An essentially repellent activity but ordained for human procreation within the bounds of holy matrimony and not to be indulged in otherwise?
Some ideas are so stupid only an intellectual could believe them (Orwell).

This reminds me of a story that my mom told me.  Apparently when my mom's mom (my grandma) married my grandpa, his mom (my great grandma on my grandpa's side) felt compelled to pull aside the new bride and give her a talk about her wifely duties.  Included in this talk was the phrase "I can't imagine, but some women actually like it."  ;D  My grandpa's parents weren't Catholics, but they were very religious (Pentacostal, of all things.)  I think about that story sometimes.  Some women actually like it.  LOL!!!

My mother's mother told me that when she was expecting her first baby, her stepmother described childbirth as an angel flying in the window and handing the baby to you.  My grandmother swore up and down that, until the real thing happened, she actually believed that story.  I have never known what to make of that.
