How to add an image to your posts.

There are two ways to add an image to a post, Hot-linking and from your own image on your own separate image hosting site (like Imageshack).
You can't upload an image to this site from your computer or link to an image on your own computer.

The way you display an image is to put the image location (URL) between the 'img' tags ([img][/img])

Thus the structure is always [img]URL[/img]

Hot-linking

This is often frowned upon as it steals the bandwidth of the site where the image is displayed. This is often not a big issue for large organisations with their own servers but can be a problem for smaller users like personal bloggers who have to pay each time an image is viewed whether it's on their page or is being hot-linked to.

But here is how you do it in Firefox, Internet Explorer should be similar.

Right mouse click on the image you want to show and select copy image location
(in this example http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/49558000/jpg/_49558331_soldiers304in_mod.jpg)

Come back to your post and put the cursor where you want the picture to appear.

Click the 'insert image button' or type [img][/img]

Put the cursor between the tags and paste in the URL thus

[img]http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/49558000/jpg/_49558331_soldiers304in_mod.jpg[/img]

This will display as shown below

However some sites don't allow hot-linking and if this is the case some form of message will appear to that effect.
Some sites will divert hot-links to a very rude picture!
So be warned, if you're hot-linking PREVIEW YOUR POST!!!

Hosting your own images.

This requires you open an account with an image host like ImageShack or Flikr, there are other sites of this type. I have used ImageShack and it's OK. Both these sites offer a basic free package which you can extend by paying a subscription. I haven't extended my basic package.

Once you have an account you can copy (upload) images from your computer to the image hosting computer. Once this is done the image host gives you a location (URL) for the image. This is what you put between the [img][/img] tags to display your image on this (or any other) forum.

So I have an image http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/7052/asmo.png

To display it all I have to do is add image tags around it thus (in fact ImageShack has display options and I choose the forum option so it adds the tags for me)

[IMG]http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/7052/asmo.png[/IMG]

And it will display as below

Centring an image

Dead easy just put the [center][/center] tags or click the centre text button around the image link [img]URL[/img] thus [center][img]URL[/img][/center] displays as

Hosting your own images.

In addition to dedicated image hosting services, if you have your own website or blog you can link to any pictures there. I often link to images from my blog rather than uploading them separately to PictureBucket.
To get the URL for an image in a page, right-click on the image and choose to open the image from the drop down menu (wording can vary slightly depending on the browser you're using.)
Then copy what's in the browser's address bar, and paste it between the IMG tags as in Tank's example.

The Magic Pudding

I like Imgur as a host for pictures, you don't need any sort of account just upload a file copy the URL of the image and forget about it.  You can make a free account by I haven't had a reason to so far.

Though I'm not sure I buy it.

I'm certain I don't.  You know, it always stuns me when someone can't understand getting a harsh reaction from people he's insulted.  As the man of the cloth said, duh.

I would describe it as a "you fucking idiot" look.  My cat gave me the stink eye once.  I actually got a picture of it and if I could figure out how to post pictures, I'd show you.

Yeah, I've tried following it several times and just can't make it work.  I figure 6 more tries should do the trick.

Do you have an image host where you upload your pictures to?
Which browser do you use?

re: browsers, I have no idea.  Unless you mean Google?

I have some pictures on Flickr and I've tried uploading them from Flickr to this site without luck.  I'm sure there's just a step I'm missing somewhere.

Can you post a link to your Flickr account please?

So your picture starts out like this at Flickr

Note the 'share' tag at the top. Clicking 'share' gives this

Ignore 'Grab the link', open the Grab HTML/BBCode at the bottom of the dialogue box by clicking on it.

You should see

Select the BBCode option by clicking on the 'radio button' to the left of 'BBCode'.

You now need to copy the text in the box to bring it to your post, it should look something like this.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/29598287@N04/6115610342/][img]http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6184/6115610342_d23c4c4370.jpg[/img][/url]
[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/29598287@N04/6115610342/]Deirdre on blanket close up[/url] by [url=http://www.flickr.com/people/29598287@N04/]ashenlight55[/url], on Flickr

and it will display like this

Deirdre on blanket close up by ashenlight55, on Flickr

You'll see there are all kinds of stuff around the picture links etc. that you may not want around it. To just show your picture you need to just find the image details, which I have extracted below.

[img]http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6184/6115610342_d23c4c4370.jpg[/img]

That piece of text displays like this.

I hope that helps.  ;D

Ask questions if it doesn't!

Hey, thanks!  Turns out I was missing a bunch of steps -- I'll see if I can make this work in the photo thread.  That look on Deirdre's face is the stink eye, by the way.

Please note. Imageshack now limits its free service to 500 images and no animated .gifs.
For $2 a month you get unlimited uploads at 10mb and image and animated .gif files are supported.

Or you could just use photobucket, which is free and supports .gifs.

Notice whos mugshot is in the tutorial?  ;D

That said, I think it is good that we have these tutorials, but I think the threads should be locked (reference only).

The discussion on the subject belongs in a separate, non-sticky post. Just a cosmethic issue.

I left this one open so people could experiment and if it goes off topic I can split the posts off into the derail thread.
