What factor do you think most critical to mission success in any enterprise?

I think it's communication.  If all participants communicate promptly, accurately, thoroughly, concisely, and relevantly, all else will fall inexorably into place, if only you've filled all necessary roles with people willing and able to perform to a professional standard, and supplied them with the equipment and materials they'll need – and these prerequisites are as dependent as everything else on quality communications.

If you happen to agree with the above - got any anecdotes?

I would place patience and a strong belief in the desired outcome would place higher than communication. Not to mention know how to use luck to one's advantage. Of course.

What can I say, I'm a one person army when I need to be and even find allies to be a liabiliy in some cases so communication is rather pointless ;).

Edited to add: how could I have forgotten persistence? The good old 'never give up.'
