To actually get some of the photons from this supernova to land in your eyeballs, the next week or so will be a good time to try it.  All you need is a decent pair of binoculars (preferably with a tripod) or a basic telescope. Here's a link which will point you to the right spot in the sky. As the late Jack Horkheimer used to say, "Keep looking up!"
