How old are you?

I have notice that we seem to have quite a lot of teenagers here, and that some members are quite a lot older than me.  This is unlike the skeptics meet I went to which was full of 30 somethings.

So how old are you?

My sociology teacher told me that faith increases in older people, perhaps in fear of death.  Bearing in mind the age weighting of the internet, this may not be true.

The essence of the mind is not in what it thinks, but how it thinks. Faith is the surrender of our mind; of reason and our skepticism to put all our trust or faith in someone or something that has no good evidence of itself. That is a sinister thing to me. Of all the supposed virtues, faith is not.

I'm 28 as of last Wednesday. I'm old enough to remember watching Airwolf on TV but not old enough to have seen the pilot episode of Magnum P.I.
I want bad people to look forward to and celebrate the day I die, because if they don't, I'm not living up to my potential.

I am 30.

Your sociology teacher is correct about the age issue. However, the increase in religiosity has not been directly linked to fear of death, yet (as far as I've read). It is usually attributed to an increase in conservativism as one ages. That said, increases in conservativism and religiousity have been shown to be a result of mortality salience manipulations (see Terror Management Theory). Therefore, I would think that the assumption that the fear of death, as one ages, would definitely have an impact on these two variables. I work with a couple of Terror Management Theory researchers and it seems like a good hypothesis.

Another twist to the whole mortality salience issue is that ultimate goal is to reduce this salience. So, it could be that when we see so called "mid-life crises", it may be the result of reducing mortality salience. And since religion tends to bring up the "when your dead" topic a lot, perhaps that is why you see a large number of 30 somethings in other forums.

So anyway, yeah, I'm 30.......and apparently bored. ;D

The number keeps changing all the time, and it's really just a state of mind, and you're only as old as you feel, and people age like wine, getting better as they get older, and...

I guess I can't stall any longer.

But I'll make you work for it. I'm 283.15 in degrees Kelvin.
