I just told my mom that I am an Atheist less then 5 minutes ago out in the garage.
She reacted better then I had hoped, she said she was disappointed and asked me to go inside so she could cry....that's better then her getting up and yelling I suppose.

Firstly, hi and welcome!

Secondly, I'm glad she reacted "ok", though you might want to tell her in a few days time that belief in gods is not something you choose to have, you either believe or you don't...and that you're still the same person you always were even if you see things a little differently, though she might see that for herself once she gets past all the misconceptions about atheism she has with time.

Well done for being honest with your mum. Her world view is not yours and visa versa. The problem is that there is so much superstitious baggage associated with a theistic world view like your mum's that she is going to have a hard time coming to terms with what you have told her. But you did the right thing by being straight with her.

Well, I've tried to keep it secret for months now, but it just became too hard keeping it up.

Well any stress she feels is now because of the world view she chooses to hold, so you can't be held responsible for that or the results thereof. In a free society all people have the right to hold their own world view and that includes you.

I guess it is sad that your mum is sad, but you're rigjt, it is better than yelling.

I've been a "non-believer" for years, but I'm pretty sure I will never tell my father directly about it (he's die-hard catholic, still goes to church every Sunday, etc.)

But then, he's pretty open about the fact that he'd rather not know about things that don't support his worldview. He's a smart man, but he chooses willful ignorance about a lot of things.  

Hopefully you can be a good ambassador for atheism to her

Since my family is of the more liberal christian variety (i was brought up to accept all science as valid along with the bible), I don't have any helpful input other than to second the suggestion to help your mom realize that you still the same person who loves her despite no longer accepting her religious views.
