Hi everyone! Just found this forum, how exciting! Let's see. I'm 22, and live in the bible belt *sigh*. I've been an atheist ever since I was a teenager. My childhood consisted of my grandmother bringing me to a southern baptist church and scaring me into religion. My grandmother told me I would burn in hell if I wasn't baptised, even if I was a "good person." I remember crying and being afraid to sleep because I was scared that I would die at any moment, and it would be too late to be "saved." I got baptised around age 10, I think. I couldn't help but think "Wait, thats it?" "I don't feel any different.." As I got older, I got access to the internet, and began finding that there weren't just christians in the world, there were so many different beliefs and theories. Once I started questioning, and got a bit older, I was able to talk to my older brother who helped me think a bit more logically. Now here I am, a happy Atheist!

Hello Cindy.
Sacred, scared and scarred seem like words worthy of some creative treatment.

If religions were TV channels atheism is turning the TV off.

Remember, your inability to grasp science is not a valid argument against it.

Oh my, yet further evidence that Satan roams the internet looking for souls to traduce.  :livelong:

Hi Cindy!

Sounds like we had a somewhat similar upbringing (scared into church).

If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed. -Albert Einstein

Yes, what a horrible way to get someone into religion, ha.. but atleast we were smart enough to think for ourselves, right??

It is scary to think what some people would be doing without their religion. It really does keep a lot of people stable..the only motivation for them to be good, is the idea of heaven.

The lack of religion keeps me quite stable though, ha.

I know, right? Now that I don't think of myself as a sinner, rather a flawed human prone to making mistakes, I'm much happier. And it actually makes THIS LIFE worth living all the more...if there's nothing that comes next, we need to make this one count.
