However I am never going to try to maintain a friendship again with someone that does this sign:

Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval

That characteristic is exactly the modus operandi of the Abrahamic religions. Threaten with hell, keep people in a constant sense of guilt, destroy the individual's ego and substitute the occasional praise and approval for doing what the particular cult requires.

Emos, I thought they had strong feelings and they had a bleak world view because the world doesn't measure up to what it should be.
Whereas sociopaths are lacking in feelings, at least normal ones.  I've probably got it all wrong, but is that a usual progression, from Emo to sociopath?

You are not precisely wrong, while not being precisely right. Close enough.

Not that I'm aware of. The 2 are usually regarded as near opposites. But perhaps that type of progression results from a sudden influx of knowledge which in turn led to a negative reaction to a person's current state.

Indeed, the progression is not exactly usual and when it comes, there usually is a trigger or a series thereof. However, I would not classify emo as the opposite of a sociopath. In broad view of each profile, there can be similarities. For instance, in regard to interpersonal relationships.

I don't see sociopath. Maybe partially antisocial but not sociopath.

I can subscribe to the second part of the first (not to a high degree though) and the second part of the second. Not abusive though and my behavioral control is better than average, based on the sample of people I know in person.

For instance, how could you know if someone is a manipulative bitch because they are a sociopath or simply because they were spoiled to death and are just use to being allowed to act that way...

That there is a VERY good point. One which I tried to make in that there Dr. Phil thread, only with another attribute in mind.
