I agree, but more specifically, the printing press.  it allowed the dissemination of information whihc forever weakened the Catholic church's hold over people's minds.

To take it another step foward, after the printing press, long distance communication. Telegrams, telephones and internets. A global civilization would surely not exist without fast information transfer.
