QuoteToday, the American Humanist Association is launching the largest atheist ad campaign in history. It challenges Biblical morality and fundamentalist Christianity and it’s bound to get a lot of attention.

There will be a TV commercial during Dateline NBC this Friday night.

There will be billboards in Idaho and Philadelphia and bus ads in Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

There will be ads on cable TV, ads in magazines like Reason and The Progressive, and ads in newspapers in places like USA Today, the Seattle Times, and the Village Voice all “demonstrating that secular humanist values are consistent with mainstream America and that fundamentalist religion has no right to claim the moral high ground.”

I hope you'll click on the link because there are a ton of great adverts which compare what religious people believe vs. what humanists believe.

What are your thoughts on this? Sweet? Misguided? Friggin sweet?
I want bad people to look forward to and celebrate the day I die, because if they don't, I'm not living up to my potential.

I like the idea and I'm thrilled to see an ad campaign at all.  I think people are really afraid of the word athiest and some sort of campaign will help turn that around.

As for the ads themselves however, they don't feel very effective to me.  They contain to much to read.  The idea is great.

I feel like the best advertising will have a sentence or fewer. People are busy, lazy etc. and typically don't stop and read blocks of text.  Then again, I'm not in advertising.  :)

I like the idea; I can see these being effective as commercials and effective on small print media...not sure that they will be readable at billboard/bus ad size but perhaps they'll reformat those. I'm disappointed that these aren't being run in the south where they are arguably needed most...but so is my complaint whenever a new atheist/secular national ad campaign is started.

Quote from: "Sophus"Any protestors yet?

Not that I've heard of.

I'm not really expecting any other than from the random especially crazy fundie (probably in florida, the sun must get to their heads)...for the most part people really don't seem to care that atheists exist.  Even in Texas we aren't getting protested all the time (not even sure if we've been protested at all aside from a few harsh comments after we've done something to get on the news), just need to figure out how to get rid of fundie school bullies (both of the child and teacher varieties).

It will be interesting to see the reactions to this.
If religions were TV channels atheism is turning the TV off.

I hope it reaches us here in Asia. The man on the link looks Asian to me. The ads are awesome! I could use them in my history class.

This isn't a part of this campaign but I think it's worth noting:

Is it more sensible to target closeted or quiet atheists than it is to try to convert theists to Humanism?

[spoiler:2bk32hal]I cringe at hearing "devout atheist". Are they intentionally trying to annoy us?[/spoiler:2bk32hal]

I like the replies from Pator Keller at the bottom of that article - same ol' "you're interpreting it wrong" b.s. If you apply what he says to the rest of the Bible ('God didn't really mean that!' or 'It was just an idiom at that time!') don't they realize it completely undermines the whole purpose of their religion - i.e. the whole concept of 'original sin'?

Interesting ad, I think it'll make some atheists happy and a lot of theists mad. I can already see their responses to that one banner...

I loved the moronic fat people in that fox interview.

Gargantuan woman who probably works at Sizzler:
Quote from: "I'm Paraphrasing"Atheism is dirty! That's not something you put on a billboard. I dunt wanna look at it none! It's fucking sick!
Church official who MUST be smart, because he has a tie:
Quote from: "I'm Paraphrasing"Well, I'm a GOOD person, so I'mma not say they can't put a billboard up. But Atheists are so dumb. Really really dumb. For real!
Inebriated obese brown man:
Quote from: "I'm Paraphrasing"I think it's okay. We all have our own beliefs. But I'm a drunk foreigner, so you should disagree with what I say!
Kirk Cameron and Will Schuester's love baby:
Quote from: "I'm Paraphrasing"If you're an atheist, you should just hide in the closet with your own reclusive atheist friends. Don't be doin' no bible bashing! JESUS FTW!
Fucking Juggalo (Don't think I don't see your ICP T-shirt):
Quote from: "I'm Paraphrasing"I love Christmas, because it brings people together, and I get to stuff my face with ham. They hate Christmas? It's wrong. These perverted babyeating fuckers are WRONG!

Merry Christmas Atheists!

For those of you who were all like:
Quote from: "Some folk up there, IDK"BAAAW! Block Text! Too much! Unreadable! The ad campaign is DOOOMED!
(Something like that, I'm a bit loopy right now...)
