Just saw an episode of The Tyra Show and the topic was on homosexuality and religion. A young adult named Jeffrey has undergone a "homosexual exorcism" because the church claims that his homosexuality is caused by demons, or rather "homosexual spirits." After the ritual, Jeffrey claims he is no longer homosexual, but occasional thoughts of men are still in his head. Here's a small clip of the episode.

I think this is one of the dumbest things I've watched in a LONG time. It's just like that Jesus Camp video tbh. People like this just piss me off. I don't hate gay people or anything, but when I hear the words gay and god in the same sentence, it outrages me. What are your thoughts on this? Does "homosexual exorcism" really work? I know the answer is no, but what the heck?!
"Put your hands to the constellations, the way you look should be a sin, you're my sinsation...
I know I'm preachin' to the congregation, we love Jesus but you'd learned a lot from Satan!
May the Lord forgive us, May the Gods be with us
In that magic hour, I've seen good christians, make rash decisions
Oh she do it, what happened to Religion? Oh sh

Many people live a monogamous life in practice, in mind is an entirely different matter.
The exorcism probably works like a placebo for a while.
Trying to stop thoughts of men/woman takes a lot of discipline and possibly a whip and much self flagation.

How do religious groups get away with this crap?!?!  I actually knew a kid in high school that went off to one of those "save the homosexual" camps.  She committed suicide because she was so terrified to be herself and full of hate for herself.  If atheists organized some camp that scared people so bad that they committed suicide, I guarantee there would be some serious consequences and backlash from society.  But instead, Christians get away with this crap because a handful of words in some old book says they can do it.   :upset:

Imagine the level of self hatred involved in identifying one's own sexuality with demonic forces.

Really quite upsetting that people put themselves through this. All in the name of a God of love; so loving he leaves people this twisted up and broken inside.

Maybe demons are really the good guys, then.

I find this concept to be utterly sickening!  Maybe this is why one in four American lgbt teens and youth can expect to get lobbed out into the street when their parents find out.

Whenever I hear of shit like this I can only think of Ted Haggard
The essence of the mind is not in what it thinks, but how it thinks. Faith is the surrender of our mind; of reason and our skepticism to put all our trust or faith in someone or something that has no good evidence of itself. That is a sinister thing to me. Of all the supposed virtues, faith is not.

That's so sad. :shake: People can't help how they're born, it's not a choice, and it's not demons. One of my best friends is a gay man, and he's told me time and again that if he actually HAD a choice he would choose to be attracted to women.

Indeed, Brave.  What reasonable person would choose to be part of a persecuted minority?

...And you still have not shipped him off to some straightening school thing with questionable methods and even more questionable success rates..?

How blasphemous of you!  :P

(Note: don't read any poison into my words as I do realize that not every believer is a fundamentalist and not even every fundie is a horror story. Just making minor mockery of them ex-gay treatment centers)

If stem cell research could cure gay, you know the church would throw billions at it.
