Do American men dance?

I worked with about a dozen Americans for a while 50/50 men/women 30 to 50 in age. In the same group there were 8 Brits, 5 men and 3 women. We all ended up in Cape Town for 3 months. The only bar within reasonable distance of the hotel had a small dance floor. The first time we went there we all got a drink and there was some music playing so we (the Brits) all got up and started to jig about and the American ladies joined us, but the blokes didn't. They solidly stuck to the bar as if riveted there! All the time we were there we had to get the American blokes into that rare condition of paralyticaly drunk but still just capable of standing before we could lever them onto the dance floor. Is this normally the case, the American ladies with us said it was, I ask here as there is a wider audience.

When I dance, people get injured.  It's not pretty.

No.  It's genetic in my case.

That's what I've heard from the overwhelming majority of my male friends (keep in mind the age group here is 20 - 30) when the subject or opportunity to dance comes up - gay men dance.

I've heard this as well, but my thoughts on dancing gay men are generally - damn, that guy can DANCE!

Not me.  I can't dance.  I would like to dance!  But I can't dance.  I've tried, and, as I've said, people just get hurt.  

I'd say I have two left feet, but that would be insulting two-left footed people.

I like a man who knows his limitations. I'm not a good dancer by any means but I don't believe I have injured anybody.

And there you have it! The times I have seen hordes of guys stuck to the wall while hordes of girls dance disconsolately and lonely are legion. I  really should not have complained, I had next to no competition.

Wild horses couldn't drag me onto a dance floor. I always assumed it would be the other way round*, reserved English chaps being reluctant to dance, while the brash and gregarious yanks threw some shapes.

I thought the same! Saturday Night Fever and all that stuff. We went to a night club in Chicago and had a great time, but one has to be a little careful as the partners of the women on the dance floor can get a bit tetsy .

Damn, I really should go to the US again and find me a dance floor! I can cut some shapes, me. You know those films where the protagonist gets in the middle of the floor and a circle of people form around them? That's me that is. Not because I'm any good, mind, but because my windmilling is so mesmerising.
