Apparently, Canada's Science Minister doesn't believe in evolution:

Doesn't he know it goes: fish, reptile, hockey player, ape, homo sapien?

Makes me wonder how you can get the job of Science Minister when you discard what science you don't like.  His job is to advise others based on the state of the sciences, no?  Seems counter-productive to the job, and if it weren't evolution, I'd be surprised if he was able to get away with it.  Anyone know any Science Ministers who ascribe to geocentrism?

An angry Canadian letter? Like this?
QuoteHello, Friend.
I'm corresponding with you today out of a concern over scientific honesty. It's been brought to my attention that you hold beliefs that may not be in accordance with your position. I find this to be somewhat disconcerting. I respectfully request that you review the evidence for evolution and keep an open mind.

Have a wonderful day,

That actually reads very much like something I'd write. When I write letters like this I always say "it has been recently brought to my attention".

The poor fellow has now said that he supports evolution, and to prove it he gave an inaccurate description of the process.

Which begs the question:  Why is it that in Canada there is such an outcry over a Science minister denying evolution while in the U.S., three of the SERIOUS candidates for the presidency said that they don't believe in evolution and no-one batted an eye?  I guess I owe the Canadians an apology.

Canada is generally a lot smarter and more capable than their neighbors to the south, especially when it comes to government. They've got more than 2 political parties, a budget surplus, a very low crime rate, universal health care, and a slew of other things. Sure, Canada gave us Celene Dion, but we forgave them for that years ago. As an American, the last thing I want is for Canada to make the same mistakes we're making. I'm having a tough enough time trying to clean up our messes.

I can never forgive them for that!  ;)

Excuse me for a moment while I say...

Holy Shit!!!

I just read the guy's back-pedaling explanation of how he believes in evolution and was stunned that he believes in something that Darwin himself tried to make people understand is wrong. Good grief, has this guy ever heard of Natural Selection?

Quote from: "the canadian whackadoo"On Tuesday, Mr. Goodyear said twice during the CTV interview that he did believe in evolution.

“We are evolving every year, every decade. That's a fact, whether it is to the intensity of the sun, whether it is to, as a chiropractor, walking on cement versus anything else, whether it is running shoes or high heels, of course we are evolving to our environment. But that's not relevant and that is why I refused to answer the question. The interview was about our science and tech strategy, which is strong.”

But then again, he is a "doctor" of chiropractic medicine, so I guess Canada should have known what they were in for when they appointed him.

I have to go lie down now for awhile.

Canada is okay with me --- but then again, my Dad is still a Canadian citizen (never naturalized), so, I may be tad biased.  (Does this mean I'm half Canadian?)  Plus, I love hockey.  Which means I have to take exception to this statement:

Quote from: "grahamers"Doesn't he know it goes: fish, reptile, hockey player, ape, homo sapien?
Come on now; that's just silly.  I know a great many hockey players, and only some of them are pre-simian.

Anyone got a link to the original Globe and Mail interview the science minister gave over which this whole thing started up?  I tried to find it but was unsuccessful.

And shouldn't it be "Eh" Tu, Canada?

(Why isn't there a vomiting smiley around here somewhere?)

In the linked article, the word "reporting" links to it, but here it is, in any case.
