How do I become a video game developer? I'd really like to become a video game developer, but I'm not sure what type of degree I should get and where I should start working. I'm deciding between tech school (like ITT Tech) or actual college, or most likely even both since that would seem like the smarter choice. Is tech school even worth it?

Now things may sound a bit weird here because I'm in Northern Ireland in the UK, so if you're in America words will have different meanings.

Aaaaanyway, I'm in a Technical College over here doing the first year of my 2 year long Games Development course and I think it's pretty good. I'm going to have to go to University after I leave here though, 'cause I'm not taking any chances. One thing I do know is that I won't become a Developer of any sort right off the bat 'cause that shit takes experience from what the teachers have told me, unless they's telling me lies. I've also been warned to take care when looking for a Games course in any University, since a lot of them like to Mask general computing courses with a lot of maths ones as Games courses by putting one or two game related units in there ad calling it a games course.

As for jobs hahaha I haven't a baldies.

You might check out the jobs at:
http://www.gamasutra.com/

See what they're looking for (languages, degrees, skillsets, tools, etc).
C++ seems to be big on the game development side now.
C# is in there too.

I'm currently writing one using Microsoft's XNA toolkit (C# - free...)

Hey - if you make it and need a Voice Over guy, look me up ;-)

My step brother is in game design and graduated from the University of Oklahoma.  Apparently he is getting paid pretty well and is in high demand and I'm thinking it is because he got his piece of expensive paper from a university instead of tech school.  If you are in a field that requires education in order to get a job, most likely you'll always be able to find a better job if you got your degree from a university.  University simply looks better even if the quality of education isn't necessarily any better than what you could have learned on your own or at tech school.

Fallen Jedii

I beat Bioshock on Sunday. I was the "good guy" that time so I got the "good guy" ending. I'm going to be evil this time to experience the "bad guy" ending.

The game is a true masterpiece. Great voice acting, deep characters, and a great story. It really kept me on the edge of my seat. I was constantly paranoid when roaming the halls of Rapture. I felt like at any second a splicer was going to jump out and eat my brain! I guess that's when you know you have a great game. An immersive experience to say the least.

I can't wait for the sequel coming out in September.

Eh. I wasn't that impressed. If you want really, really good voice acting, check out Drakengard. It's truly, truly disturbing. And good. Disturbingly good. It's Square Enix, oddly. It's the video game equivalent of a "Disney Nasty".  :D Oh, and, uh, spoilers on the Wiki page. Read with extreme caution. It's not a story that should be spoiled by any means.

I've noticed that people either really love Bioshock or are just "eh" about it.  I liked the graphics but never played.

VIDYA GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAMS

Oh man oh man you guys I can't stop playing Fallout 3. Anyone who's anyone who knows me IRL or on Twitter knows that I've been obsessing over it like a twelve year old prepubescent fangirl does over Edward Cullen. I can’t pinpoint why exactly I like it so freakin’ much because for me, it’s pretty unusual for me to be like this over one game. I think it's the whole Post-Apocalyptic thing, since I am such a fangirl of those in general and the fact that Fallout 3 does a good job of the whole “Hey guys, the world’s banjaxed have fun trying to survive outside underground caves” thing.

Anyway, I've played Bioshock thanks to my fanboy BFF giving it to me and I can safely say that it's a good game. I didn't really care for the graphics much except when it got real dark and I loved looking at the blood and notes and stuff everywhere. Really kinda made me freak out a bit when it was all dark and you could hear a Big Daddy around the corner. Speaking of games having notes on walls, Left 4 Dead is hella amusing when you stop to read all the notes. It’s sad seeing all the spilt up families, but there are some silly ones in there too, like the “I miss the Internet” one.

i sold my copy of fallout 3 to get dead space (limited funds). But i was considering re-buying it for the downloadable content. <<oblivion was still better>> SHIVERING ISLES WAS AMAZING

YOU SOLD FALLOUT 3 FOR AN INFERIOR GAME?!!! WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU?!

But seriously though, you should have just kept Fallout 3 and rented Dead Space since it's kind of short compared to the gameplay value you get out of Fallout 3.

i honestly got more enjoyment out of dead space than fallout 3. I'm a sucker for horror shooters. but this new game coming out in june "prototype" has me all anxious and whatnot. I'm very much looking forward to it
