North Caroline incumbent Elizabeth Dole has a new ad out against her opponent for Senate, Kay Hagan.  In it, she describes how Ms. Hagen consorts with atheists, having attended a fundraiser at the home of an advisor to the Godless Americans PAC.  The comments are amazingly against Ms. Dole and you have to read a ways down before you get the an anti-atheist comment.  When all is lost, resort to fear.

(I'd love to embed the video but I have no clue how.)

Jesus consorted with whores. Vote Ba'al!
I want bad people to look forward to and celebrate the day I die, because if they don't, I'm not living up to my potential.

Seriously, she's getting away with that?  If she said "consorts with Jews/insert-another-religious-stance-here," the press would be all over her.  *grumbles*

GRRRR...

I just heard about this on Olbermann and I'm so mad. Like being an atheist makes me any less American...

The Republicans have really buried themselves this year...

I'm not at all implying that Obama is perfect... any fact checking site will show that he's had a few lies pass his lips as well, but by and large, the Republicans are running a horribly dirty campaign this time around.  Makes me think having a king and queen wouldn't be so bad because it's a foregone conclusion who will be the next one up.  ;)

Well, the OTHER candidate is now making her statement.  She says Dole's ad is a low blow... not because it is a mean-spirited attack on atheism, using it as a fear mechanism... nope.  Because the ad "attacks her Christian faith."

The ads are despicable because it insinuates that she hangs out with and accepts money from atheists.  <gasp!>  The horror!

And does she have the balls to step up and say SO WHAT if I went to their house?  So WHAT if they gave me money?  They're people and Americans, just like me, and I stand to represent them, just like I do all of YOU?

Nope.

I'm so sick of this election year.

Goes right back to the atheist-as-most-hated American research I've dug up.

Yep. Even after 9/11, atheists were still more hated and less trusted than Muslims.

I hate to say it, but the majority of Americans are dumb.

Time to start palling around with atheists, Libby!

I was really torn on how to feel about this situation. I was never going to be voting for Dole here (I am not a huge fan of Hagan, but she was certainly the better option here), so it was not going to change my mind one way or another. Of course the ad was insulting and insulting to many of us. Dole was losing and desperate and was grasping at straws. Hagan's response was interesting. She isn't an atheist and has a right to say that she isn't. I just wish she wouldn't have treated the ad as such an insult.

It is pretty telling that Dole could have used "terrorist" instead of "atheist" and the tone of the whole exchange wouldn't have been any different.

I totally agree with the person who commented before me. Too many people criticize Senator Dole for the accusation, but don't realize that Hagan's campaign wasn't much better in taking the accusation as an insult! I feel like public reaction to the issue has 1) not been strong enough; and 2) not focused on the proper direction. Does anyone know why atheist movements aren't taking legal, or at least publicized action?
