did you used to be religious or mabe even agnostic, or dare i say it, conservative. I know, for me that mindset of "your religion is right / hate all others, democrats are evil / hate them, the french are losers and are wimps / hate them, gays are different / hate them, black people / don't hate but be careful. when i look back on that i find myself laughing at how ridiculous it is. but i'm really not kidding, that was how i was raised

I was lucky enough to grow up with hippie peace loving parents.Both parents are Methodist so I grew up with religion.But we weren't taught hate towards anyone.Of course almost everyone who didn't believe in god was gonna go to hell.But that wasn't talked about to often.I stopped going to church at 12 because of a moment of clarity,funny thing was that moment happened in a church of all places.All belief in God,heaven,hell,Jesus stopped in that church.Maybe I should go back and tell the pastor thanks for that.

I've always been on the right side of the political spectrum. Since my father is a socialist, we have had many interesting political discussions with each other in the past. It is however difficult to compare the political system in the USA with that of the Netherlands (and other European countries). If my father and I would have to vote in the USA then we probably both vote Democrat, even though that party is a bit too leftist to my liking and too conservative to my father's liking. Problem is that there are no alternatives, because unlike the Netherlands (with dozens of political parties)  you only got two parties to choose from. So I can't really say that I ever hated Democrats, but I have to agree with the fact that the French are indeed losers and wimps   .

I've been an atheist for as long as I have conciously thought about it. Thus, I've been a de-facto atheist for my entire life.

When it comes to politics, I'm a liberal democrat. Been this way for as long as I was interested in politics. At least always on the right/blue side of the political scale. Never been a socialist, probably never will be one.

Now...some of my older family members aren't as "tolerant. It's amazing how people can believe god made everyone, or made them in his image, yet be racist.

Sounds like my other family members.It got to be to much for me so I don't speak to most of them.I have an Aunt who just loves to spout off racists and sexist remarks.After her lesbians wouldn't make good parents because they warp their children...Well I stopped speaking to her.I don't want my kids around that.

So are you simply applying this question to present day American, right wing, conservative, WASPs, or does this apply to all religions? The question is narrowly focused. Perhaps we should include a wider viewpoint of "religious" than this?

It seems kind of silly to imply that all religious people, or formerly religious people fit the mold you've cast. I know plenty of "religious" and formerly religious people who are:

 - Liberals
 - Not even Americans for that matter
 - Democrats
 - Gay
 - Very happy with the French
 
And to answer the question, yes, I used to be religious, being raised roman catholic and then "being saved" in college in an independent baptist church.

I was baptized, confirmed, and raised Lutheran and I tried to the best of my ability to be religious, to believe.  I said I did yet doubted for years until I was on my own and could think for myself.  I always asked questions and never got an answer beyond "you must have faith."  Bah.

But I don't recall ever being anti-any religion or ethnic group due to being religious.
