Quote from: "oldschooldoc"Looks like I found a good thread, unfortunately it seems to be stagnant. I would love to talk more with people from Texas.

Whereabouts in south Texas are you posting from?

Well Squid, looking at your profile, I realize we are really close in proximity. I live in Floresville, TX, maybe 70 miles from you. I actually work in San Antonio, right off of I 35.

In Texas 70 miles is still "in the neighborhood".  I'm stuck here in San Marcos until at least August.  From there I'm not sure where I'll end up - Austin, Dallas, Corpus, San Antonio...just where ever a decent job may be found.

oldschooldoc

I agree, 70 miles can be a trip to the grocery store in some cases. San Marcos isn't too bad, it sure isn't Austin though. What kind of work are you in?

San Marcos is "ehhh", Austin is mucho bettero.  Work, well aside from enduring the horrible trial known as gradschool, I was working as a research assistant but the department had to pay more for equipment then they thought and didn't get as much from their grants as they thought so the first thing to go - grad students.  So I have to find a job to pay the bills in the mean time.  Before I started as a research assistant in August I was working from a non-profit organization out of Austin and I worked in the Luling school district as a service-learning youth advisor.  It was a pretty cool job, a lot of independence and flexibility.  I now regret leaving it but all well.

oldschooldoc

That sounds quite rewarding (the non-profit org.). As far as finding new jobs, I'm sure something will come up. Do you know of any groups (freethought, atheist, etc.), formal or informal, that meet up around our area (San Antonio and surrounding)?

No I sure don't.  But I've never really looked either.

Hidy
I just joined tonight, so one more sane Texan is here.
We had an incredibly cute tiny terrrier  in the 90's named Squid.
There's nothing wrong with ambivalence--is there?

Freeatlast--like your name and the interesting built-in conflict.
My Rock solid atheism feels guilty every Sunday afternoon for the  two hours of by KKDA AM's glorious gospel music.  The music is SO beautiful. One of the old-time gospel quartet numbers they play is Free At Last.  And no-one can deny that Rev. Dr. King's "Free at Last. . . " is one of the best things for America.

Hey, oldschooldoc, you're close to me too. I live in San Antonio, outside 1604 south.
