I wonder if this discovery would change anything in the minds of theists.

It would be a bigger shock to the religion community to find intelligent life over single celled organisms or plant life. But I wonder if it would cause theists (mostly Christians) to reexamine their religion or even abandon it all together.

The bible doesn’t talk about life outside of earth, but how quick would Christians try and make life on other planets suddenly appear in the bible? If this discovery would not be enough for theist to really rethink their religion, then I don’t know what would.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring. -cs

I don't believe that theist changes their minds incase we discover life on other planets. It has been known for years that the Vatican have plans of how to deal with such a situation. Most likely there will be some discussion about whether these poor creatures have a soul or not and most religion groups will probably send missionaries, like they've done in the "good" old past. How the average bible-belter would react, I'm not 100% sure. I tend to think that they'll regard the intelligent lifeforms on other planets as creatures of the devil. In the end there is no need to rewrite the bible, because we all know that the bible is the word of god and therefore infallible :) .
The universe never did make sense; I suspect it was built on government contract.

Aliens: "We come in peace. We bring with us cures to diseases."
Bush: "Welcome to earth, Alieny. I call 'em alieny cause it's easy to remember. *snicker* Seeing as it's Sunday, y'all wanna go to meet Gody?"
Aliens: "Wait, you still have religion?!"
Bush: *drooling*
Aliens: "S**t. Alright, we'll be back in a few thousand years."

Id' be more concerned about the impression we would leave on an extraterrestrial, intelligent life form. Quite frankly, a lot of what members of our species do is extremely embarrassing.
I want bad people to look forward to and celebrate the day I die, because if they don't, I'm not living up to my potential.
