That sucks! How damaged?

Not extensive, but it's enough. Driver's side front quarter panel is dented. Passenger door on driver's side has some scratches. Rear bumper is dented and scratched.

What do you mean by "unless there is something you need to know." I like to know everything I can about my things, but I don't know whether I need to know that kind of thing.

Mutter, mutter, bloody computers, mutter, bloody Windows, mutter bloody McAfree, mutter, mutter . . .

Guess who just bought a new laptop and has spent all day trying to sort out which passeord belongs to which account, wondering why Windows locks up after ten minutes and why it takes five hours to do a system recovery . . . Then another two hours doing upgrades.

Only good buts both HP and MacAfee have telephone tech lines that actually work. Be nice if their ststems actually worked though, even the techs needed several attempts!

:notsure: Uninstall McAfee and install Avast!
Thinking that!

It was in trying to do that that caused Windows to keep locking up, I ended up with two security systems competing.  All ok at the moment, after yet another serious Windows upgrade overnight, so may leave McA in for the 30 ttial until I have backed up all my stuff onto a new archive drive. My old 250Gb one is just about stuffed, and slow with it.

Know the feeling, some scumbag dented my nearside rear door in a car park. From the shape and position guessing it was some git with an SUV. No other door shape could have hit that high and missed the "bulge" lower down in the door.

Not worth the excess to get the door changed, crease too tight for bashing out and the metallic paint finish not good for respraying.

I loved simple black cars, so easy to fill in and blow over!

If you know that, can you tell me why Windows Defender won't run or even open on Windows 10? I looked up the error code before and got nothing.

Do you happen to have the error code?

With just the symptom to go by, the reasons are numerous.

I suspect the error code to be one symbol short. Does it start with a zero after 0x? That would be unusual for Microsoft error logging.

(I use the following list, but it does not have 0x000... codes, as they are in hexadecimal: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms681382(v=vs.85).aspx)

Them's some remote procedure calls failing, is what it looks like.  :headscratch:

Do you have another firewall already installed, perchance?

I may have. It might have been installed years back with another anti-virus that came with the computer, or it may be from one of the tons of anti-viruses my dad paid for in the past.

Those are my first suspects. You could try running Microsoft Windows Update troubleshooter (link below) It will not always find the errors, but it may generate another code which would be... helpful.

Yes, the error is in some remote procedure call, so the thinness of the information is not really surprising. Do you remember which antivirus/security suites you had installed before?
