New to the Happy Atheist. I am a member of several Atheist forums and enjoy the discussions. I have been an Atheist most of my life, but have been an open atheist for the last six years. My stats are male, chemist by education and work, married, very active in individual sports (running, biking, fishing, sailing). Just hit the six decades mark, still working and don't see myself retiring any time soon. My wife and I have one child, already finished college and working in her field. Personality type is INTJ, and if they had poster children for the type I would most likely be on the cover.
I live in Cary, NC just outside the Research Triangle Park, and am active in several Atheist groups in the area.

Hi cncracer and welcome.

Does your name have any reference to CNC machining and/or bike racing? I do a bit of both myself.

My Dad is from Fayetteville, NC, but I've only ever been there once for a weekend. Can't say I saw much of it. I'm one of the several English Atheists here. Some are even as old as you :D

One of the Mods will be stopping by soon to officially welcome you with a few pointers to the site, but in the meantime take some time to look around, have a read of the forum rules and get stuck in. We do have our resident miserable sods here, but most are happy and all are fun to be around.

Enjoy...

Hi cncracer, and welcome!  I just welcomed you on the "What's on your mind?" thread, but thought I would say hello here as well.  I was just in Columbia, NC in March for a friend's wedding.  Lovely little town and unreasonably nice weather for March (compared to what I'm used to in CO.)

How cool that you are a chemist!  I considered majoring in Chemistry in college, but I let some people scare me away with their talk about Organic Chemistry and how hard it was.  If I had it to do over, I would be more confident and give it a go.  I always found Chemistry fascinating.  This is going to sound stupid maybe, but I have always been a little in awe of the periodic table.  It's so simple, and yet so perfect and orderly and it even predicts things about elements that haven't been found yet; it amazes me that a normal human with a brain like mine was able to think it up.   ;D

Anyway, I'm rambling.  Welcome!

Hi cncracer

The only oddity you'll find here is that you can only post in the three sub-fora of 'Getting to Know You' for you first 10 post. You get let loose with the 11th.

Welcome to HAF

My dad, of all people, taught me that.  He wrote a song about it before he got all godded out.

Thanks guys, I already feel like a happy atheist LOL.  It was a real surprise to see so many members reply on an introduction. Will keep working on the needed post to become a posting member so we can get into some real debates.

Scissorlegs:
The CNC is a boat in my case. The wife and I like to race sail boats, and the CNC 44 is what we raced the most.  It is a real rush as you approach the start line with that much power coming just from nature.
Fayetteville is about 40 Min south of me. If this area keeps growing it will become a suburb or the triangle.

Welcome! Personally I always hated chemistry, but I'm married to a chemist, so I speak highly of them now  ;D Hope you enjoy your time here.

Welcome to HAF. Pay no attention to Git. We really do not think of you as cannon fodder, honest.
It appears to me (whether rightly or wrongly) that direct arguments against Christianity and theism produce hardly any effect on the public; and freedom of thought is best promoted by the gradual illumination of men's minds which follows from the advance of science - Charles Darwin

I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the object of his creation, whose purposes are modeled after our own -- a god, in short, who is but a reflection of human frailty. Neither can I believe that the individual survives the death of his body, although feeble souls harbor such thoughts through fear or ridiculous egotism. - Albert Einstein

Religion is a by product of fear. For much of human history, it may have been a necessary evil, but why was it more evil than necessary? Isn't killing people in the name of God a pretty good definition of insanity. - Arther C. Clarke

Faith means not wanting to know what is true. - Friedrich Nietzsche
