Frankly I think this policy is stupid, but, I have a few questions on the subject. 1) How does this policy apply in the cases of pregnancy brought about by rape? 2) What does this policy say happens after the girl has given birth, Is she still excluded from attending school? 3) Are they going to require paternity testing? And if they do, will they apply the same punishment to the father should he happen to be a student.
My guess is sometimes this might happen (in regards to 1,) but who knows if they would actually enforce the law, and even if they did-- would they still shame the mother and force her to have it? ugh.. makes me sick thinking about it.

It is concievable that rulings such as this might be self defeating or at least failing to take advantage of life lessons.. Suppose we let pregnant teen agers come to school. There it will become all too apparent to classmates that morning sickness is not fun, there will be evidences of all the other miseries that an expectant mother endures. Might that not be a deterrent for most of the other girls?. By deterrent I mean avoiding unprotected sex not abstinence.

This is upsetting, but not surprising. The school system in Louisiana is so completely fucked that they recently passed laws to privatize public schools, and are starting a voucher program. A friend of mine passed this delightful little tidbit on to me, since she knows I take an interest in the state of education here: http://www.motherjones.com/blue-marble/2012/07/photos-evangelical-curricula-louisiana-tax-dollarsBasically, more than a handful of the schools participating in the voucher program are teaching junk Bible science and using text books from Bob Jones University Press (Bible based). I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it, and it scares me that the future generations are being taught that evolution is a lie, that electricity is a mystery, that homosexuality is a choice, etc... and that these things are being presented as fact in brain-washing institutes masquerading as halls of education. The academic in me is physically ill over it. The last job I worked required a lot of interaction with kids and teenagers, and these kids don't know how to read or do basic mathematics. I had a ten year old ask me in earnest one day whether 80 was more or less than 150. He had no developmental disabilities, he was just a product of the average school in Louisiana. Stuff like that wasn't uncommon, as I would have kids ask me how much something cost when the large, clearly-printed signs were right in front of the, To give you an idea of how things work here, a C average still qualifies for honor roll. WTF is that shit? These kids are disadvantaged enough already without the complications that such a discriminatory policy is bound to create. Part of me also wonders from a legal stand point whether this couldn't violate parts of the HIPPA laws. Unless parents signed some kind of agreement regarding the pregnancy testing policy, I can't see how coercing teenage girls into being examined and tested or face threat of expulsion could be kosher.

What really scares me about this post is that this seems to be completely legal. How is it legal to seriously teach such ignorance when we know SO much because of advancement in Science?
I don't get it..
Electricity a mystery? My Asmo, that's scary.

Whatever happened to just giving away huge quantities of free rubbies and getting out of the kids' way or, failing that, sticking fingers in ears and humming loudly?

But the REAL problem is that they are not on another planet!

It's good that there is as yet no simple quarrel to crystallise the tension between the two halves of the USA. Slavery did that last time; Americans had better hope that some religion-based issue doesn't become too prominent this time around. There wouldn't be a formal war, of course, but things could get a lot nastier than they are now.

But the REAL problem is that they are not on another planet! Yes, you see... The Asmo, it is reported, is working on that minor little technicality. Something about yellow stones and cold ears or some such... Apparently, that leads to epic explosions of cosmic proportions somehow...

I had sex ed in 7th grade. I knew more than the teacher taught from reading anatomy and biology books. X_x Actually, I had sex ed in 11th grade (1982) and learned a lot that I did not know. Neither my church nor my parents had supplied me with anything beyond what I needed to know to identify sin, and since I was already aware and terrified of my same sex attraction I wanted nothing to do with sex. That course really opened up my eyes. ...and as you know, I have lived in New York City my whole life...

In the USA (where both Sweetdeath and I live): 7th grade is generally age 12 or 13. 11th grade is generally age 16 or 17. High school ends after 12th grade.

OK, so we need to add one year of age to compare your grades with our 'year 7' etc.
Our year 7 = age 11 to 12, and so on.
