Title: Did You Know?
Post by: The Magic Pudding on February 11, 2012, 08:17:00 AM
Did you know a wombat's rump is protected by a bony plate and acts as a defensive shield if the wombat is chased down its burrow by a predator?

I've probably set the bar too high with such an excellent introductory "did you know" but don't let that stop you, astound us with your knowledge.

I don't mind balderdash posts, they could be replied to with (https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.snesclassics.com%2Fimages%2Fsmilies%2Fliar.gif&hash=a8090028e928cabba9fd4039f1cc2e86eabe0af9)

Still in marsupials . . .

Did you know that kangaroos can't fart? Scientists are trying to use their DNA to genetically engineer cows with lower greenhouse gas output (last I heard).

I never claimed to be tasteful. :P

Did you know that when you flush the toilet, over 30,000 germs are released into the air. This is why you should not leave your toothbrush near the toilet!

Most Canadians aren't marsupials. (https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.snesclassics.com%2Fimages%2Fsmilies%2Fliar.gif&hash=a8090028e928cabba9fd4039f1cc2e86eabe0af9)

Frogs cannot vomit. Whenever a frog absolutely has to barf, it barfs its entire stomach. How it gets its stomach back in is beyond me. And honestly, chucking you stomach out of your mouth just can't feel very good at all.

The Arokawi language has an alphabet of 39 letters, six of which are never used (at least not in polite company).

It is still an offence in certain parts of Ireland (punishable by a fine of up to a maximum of 50 guineas) to depict Jesus wearing a porkpie hat.

In ancient Japan, public contests were held to see who in a town could fart the loudest and longest. Winners were awarded many prizes and received great recognition.

Probably unladen as fuel and munitions aren't that expensive.

Are there natural targets outside Aspen, that could be aimed at within Aspen?

Like, if you could stand just inside the city limits, and aim the catapult out at things?  Yes, elk, I suppose.

The dot over the i is called a tittle, the plastic tip on the end of your shoelace is called an aglet, and there are no words in any current English dictionary that rhyme with 'orange', 'purple', or 'silver'.

Monty Python reference?
And, weirdly enough, I did know that about Wombats.

Here's a fun fact: The word testicles comes from Latin testiculi meaning "little witnesses",  and to swear by one's testicles was an ancient form of oath. Hence the word "testify".

Wow, that gives a whole new meaning to the popular Christian song by Avalon called 'Testify to Love'...

"For as long as I shall live, I will testify to love, I'll be a witness in the silences when words are not enough..."

ROFL!

I expect most people do know this but it is pretty cool.

QuoteSwim bladders are evolutionarily (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swim_bladder) closely related (i.e. homologous) to lungs. It is believed that the first lungs, simple sacs connected to the gut that allowed the organism to gulp air under oxygen-poor conditions, evolved into the lungs of today's terrestrial vertebrates and some fish (e.g. lungfish, gar, and bichir) and into the swim bladders of the ray-finned fish.[5] In embryonal development, both lung and swim bladder originate as an outpocketing from the gut; in the case of swim bladders, this connection to the gut continues to exist as the pneumatic duct in the more "primitive" ray-finned fish, and is lost in some of the more derived teleost orders. There are no animals which have both lungs and a swim bladder.

The cartilaginous fish (e.g. sharks and rays) split from the other fishes about 420 million years ago and lack both lungs and swim bladders, suggesting that these structures evolved after that split.[5] Correspondingly, these fish also have a heterocercal fin which provides the necessary lift needed due to the lack of swim bladders. On the other hand, teleost fish with swim bladders have neutral buoyancy and have no need for this lift.

This quote (and it's many variations), "I may not agree with what you have said, but I'll defend your right to say it is" is usually and incorrectly attributed to Voltaire.  It was actually first used by Evelyn Beatrice Hall when writing about Voltaire.

Rats are another creature that cannot burp, fart, or otherwise pass gas.  If they are given anything with carbonation, it will cause their stomachs to explode.

David Bowie's real last name is Jones, but he changed it to avoid being confused with Davy Jones from the Monkees.  He also played the Elephant Man on Broadway at one point and has two different colored eyes.
