Title: Higgs boson particle may have been found
Post by: Crow on December 12, 2011, 12:27:14 PM
Higgs boson: Excitement builds over 'glimpses' at LHC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-16116230)

More data needs to be collected to make a formal discovery but suggest that within the next year we will know for certain if the particle exists.

:o Now THIS is nice. I've been waiting for the Higgs boson. The near future should prove very interesting indeed  ;D

That's so cool, but after the neutrino measurement, I'll wait until next year when they have more certain results - either way.

The Higgs boson sounds so working class!  Why couldn't they call it the Eberschwanz-Arschkratzer boson, or some such?  Much more sciency.

Anyway, they'd better find it soon - the Pope wants it urgently because you can't have mass without it.

Call it HIGGS. Then assign some random sciency words to each letter  :P

So you could give yourself some mass..? You know, the Xmas food will do that with great success  :P

There's your problem, right there! Try warping them in stead of wrapping.  :D

Actually, I think that physics joke has a hole in it - for instance, the light travels from the Sun here in about what..? Eight minutes? So something that would get here in four minutes and cover the same distance would need to be faster, yes? But it would still take four minutes of time in a "forward" direction. See what I mean, yes?

Aye, that's the problem with jokes.

I am fairly impressed by the number of half-bad (And I use the term "half" very loosely here :P) nerdy physics jokes we managed to conjure up though  ;D

Mine are almost fully bad, if not filled to the brim with bad. If they get too nerdy though, fewer people can enjoy them, so I generally stick to colloquial knowledge on jokes. Hence the bad physics in my bad jokes.

Nothing just an excuse to use the ASCII facepalm at the pi /pie pun. In fact I love pies I had a venison, red wine, and roast vegetable pie for dinner and it was amazing.

This is a pretty interesting.

QuoteIs it the Higgs discovery? In exclusive interviews with UCSD-TV's Rich Wargo, UC San Diego Physics Professor Vivek Sharma, director of Higgs research for the CMS detector, explains the massive efforts to discover the Higgs Boson using the LHC at CERN
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TdEbu7kM_Q&list=FL5pYL0jzMue5TJd-KsojoEQ&index=1&feature=plpp_video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TdEbu7kM_Q&list=FL5pYL0jzMue5TJd-KsojoEQ&index=1&feature=plpp_video)

It's a little over 43 minutes long but worth the time if your interested in the Higg's or the LHC.
