Title: How are you dealing with this heatwave?
Post by: Sweetdeath on July 22, 2011, 07:24:43 PM
It's 102° in NYC, with a heat index of   115°. Pretty aweful. I don't own an a/c, so i've just been laying still with a slight breeze from outdoors. Probably drank my body weight in water. Also, i've been taking cold showers every two hours.

So sad, because last week for Harry potter, the whole week was 80°, breezy, and beautifully comfortable!

Where do you live?
How hot is it?
And how are you dealing with the heat?

Kansas has been over 100 for more than two weeks. We set a daily record a few days ago at 111
. They say tomorrow could reach 110. Western Kansas is in a severe drought. We just stay inside, and water plants after 8pm. Oh, and August is usually hotter than July here.  >:(

we have a heatwave here too (not very serious yet) ALthough I ahve an a/c, I try not to use it much (because of a recent... "Accident" here in our power station)
I have all the windows open (hello roaches!!!), have bought a fan, feet in cold water, in my pajamas and drinking water all the time

In Los Angeles (hence used to heat waves in  July)
It's noon and currently a cool 74.
But I live with my a/c in my room on all the time! It's like my own personal igloo.

Been a pretty mild winter this year, around 15C, but very wet.

Yeah, I heard the mid west was in severe drought warning. It's really scary!  It's so hot here that the pools are closed, because the water temp is about 85°.

Out here in Oregon, it's flirting with being full blown summer. We had 2 1/2 weeks of 80-85 degrees and sunny, but then all last week it was overcast and raining a little. We haven't had any t-storms yet, but those are always once it's been dry enough so the forest goes up in flame.

Currently, its about 75, really humid. Forecast has 90 coming up.

In Arkansas it's been 90+ with dewpoints in the 70s pretty much since the beginning of June.  Add to that the fact that most weather patterns have gone north of the state, and most of the air mass thunderstorm activity has been south of the state, and there hasn't been relief for almost two months.  Just like Kansas, Arkansas isn't done yet, as August will be just as bad.

EDIT: I didn't answer the question.  I'm acclimated, so I'm not really doing anything different, other than drinking more water.

That is one mistake people make.  A cool/cold shower feels real good, no doubt, however the only thing you do by taking a cold shower (other than the short relief) is lower your body temperature (or simply the feeling of) thus making it hotter feel hotter when you get out.  Certainly take a cold shower to cool off, but gradually make the water hot again.  When you step out of the shower (especially in 100+ temperatures) you'll feel cooler longer as you've raised your body/skin temp and it is closer or higher than the outside air.

I live in So. Cal. where today's temp is is in the high 70's to low 80's.  Quite nice.

When it's hot like that here, I simply jump in the pool for a while.  :)

I love insulating! I'm a big believer that thick walls and foam and reflecting away heat are superior to running a ton of electricity into an air conditioning unit or central a/c. The problem is that my house, which I love, gets a ton of sunlight during the summer from noon until about 6-7 p.m. While opening up in the morning to let in the cool, shaded air in is great, the walls and windows get very hot during the day and into the evening.

I started by pulling all of the insulation in my attic, which was a lot of fun. After one of the hottest and most physically demanding weekends of my life, I had a completely clean attic with absolutely no insulation whatsoever. I went through like 3 filters on my gas mask and had to hire a special company for waste. I went through about a dozen options for insulation before finally deciding that recycled paper was the best option for me. It fit my price range, it's green, and apparently it's just as flame-retardant as fiber-based insulation. My house's temperature dropped 10-20 degrees overnight during high heat. It was GLORIOUS. I'm slowly replacing my windows with the double or triple pane kind as I can afford it, too, which is helping quite a bit. I've also noticed that the insulation and windows reduce outside noise considerably. For the windows I've not yet converted, I went to Home Depot and picked up this insulating material that's similar to the kind they use for window visors for cars, reflective surfaces with insulating plastic inside, and I've covered my back and side-yard windows, and that helps a great deal, too.

It's around 82 degrees F (or about 27.7C), but it's about 72 degrees F (22C) inside.

109 degrees fahrenheit down here in San Antonio.

I don't really feel the heat as much as I do the cold. But 109 down here is just cake for me. I was mowing the lawn around close to noon with no shirt on. Sweat dripping off of my brown, 21 year old muscled body. The cold shower felt good too.

I really don't want to hear complaining from a city where most people don't bother to buy A/C because it isn't needed. I drip sweat as soon as I step outside 8 months out the year and i'm completely drenched if I need to get in my car at 2pm.  ;D

We had 7 consecutive days of temps over 100F in June. This month we have had (non consecutively) 22 days of temps over 100F with the lowest tempt at 98F/36.6C and highest at 104F/40C. And August is supposed to be the hottest month. I can hardly frakin wait *extreme sarcasm here*.

Honestly, I was ready for winter 7 weeks ago.

So how do I cope? In the house before 10am on days I'm not at work. At work, by Wednesday I'm feeling drained. On Friday, I'm a zombie and straining to be somewhat amicable with my coworkers. But I have found a way to cope recently.

I work inside a van crammed with electronics and a laptop. The engine is partially poking into the interior of the van (of course it's covered) and I have a 3000 watt gasoline electrical generator in the back. There's a thin wall separating me from the generator. With the A/C running full blast and the tire iron pushing down the accelerator to make the engine run at around 1500 rpms (gets the A/C compressor running fast) AND a 5 gallon bucket of ice sitting on the passenger side floor, I can keep the interior down to around 88-89F/31.6C. Tomorrow I'm going to try two 5 gallon buckets of ice.

Temps above 100F

August (so far): 15 (9 days 105+)
July:30 (3 days 105+)
June: 7

I am so sick and tired of everything outside I touch...even in the shade...is hot. Really starting to get on my nerves.

I don't like never-ending heat either. At least if it gets cold I can add clothes and it's easier to heat a room than cool it.

Living in south-west England I can only imagine how that must feel. Yesterday it was cold grey and drizzly with a mighty high temperature of 13 degrees (55 degrees in old money). I would kill for some lovely warm sunshine, we only get one or two days a year above 25 degrees (77F), and that's in a good summer!

TFL, you can't be very far from me - I'm near Hereford.  The sod-factor is, although the summer's been pretty poor here, there's been very little rain.  My lawns are pretty much browned off and we water the flowers every day.  We always seem to be getting little showers to spoil things, but they don't add up to much.

Yesterday was pretty hot...106F/41C. Even cold showers aren't cold anymore. The ground is so hot and parched, temp of my cold water is now 82F/27.7C. And to think Whitney and I have another month to go.

Yeah, Whitney, I see only the die hard runners/walkers/bicyclist outside anymore and that's before 9am. Our indoor rec centers are packed.

Apparently it's been hotter than Hades here. Up in the 90s. Which is the usual heat wave for SoCal in August. I wouldn't know. I've been off work a week with the tooth incident. In my room with my very own a/c running.  ;D

Was 108F/42.2C yesterday, last time I looked. Supposed to be 103F/39.4C today. If memory serves, today will be the 66th day of 100+ temps this year. And I think we need only 7 more days to break the all time record set in 1980.

I briefly left my igloo 69 degree a/c room to go hunt food at Subway. And yesterday I had one of those cold showers where I just sit my head under the shower head and let it steam off. I don't understand this, I'm living 7° latitude below Lisbon and winter is cool/chilly.
Looking at here (http://www.lisbon-guide.info/facts_visitor/weather) mean max temp for December is 14.8°C, that's cold.
And it seems to rain every second day.

Magic Pudding, I think you've just proven my point. I was thinking of wintering in the Algarve, but where I live in Bristol it rains at least every second day pretty much all year round, and 14.8 degrees isn't unusual on a July or August afternoon (although it would be below average). It would be the average temperature in mid-May not mid-December, and the English weather forecasters would call that a nice warm late spring / early summer's afternoon and not 'cool or cold or chilly'. If I can get that kind of weather in January I'll be very very happy!

What heatwave? This is just a slightly warmer summer....   Anyhow, a good a/c unit, lots of water and lots of cursing. My friends had their second annual redneck pool party the other day. Let me describe this for you. Take one pickup truck. Line bed with two tarps. Fill with hose water. Add ice chest full of coors lite. Gather all your friends in cut offs/wife beaters/tan lines etc.   BAM! Redneck pool party!   ;D

Gather all your friends in cut offs/wife beaters/tan lines etc.   BAM! Redneck pool party!   ;D
That sounds fun  ;D

I'm about a block from the beach in So Cal and it hasn't really been too bad -- there were a few nights I had to run the fan but that's it.  Right now it's actually cool enough to make me think about flannel pjs.
I'm getting a picture of big floppy hat, book bag and beach towel here?  ;)

I just noticed what I assume is your name in your signature, even that is appropriate to a beach   8)

Yep, I'm practically a beach cliche.

CVS is big, floppy hat gold, esp. for big, floppy straw hats.

The heat is finally over...at least where I live. We might get a couple really hot days still, but I think it's finally broken.
