Title: Characters that annoy you
Post by: Illbethewriter on June 11, 2011, 11:30:32 PM
Is it just me or is Jenny an absolute b*tch to Forrest Gump? I'm watching it now and just wishing he would just give her a knuckle sandwich. There are soooo many films I watch where the characters annoy me. Which characters REALLY grind you - in films, books, tv programmes or otherwise?

I don't like it when the stargate people go to a new planet with their guns pointing at everyone.
They don't seem to say hey this is a nice place and leave them hanging on a tree, if they're asked to leave them behind it's a deeply suspect request that bodes ill. Can you imagine aliens arriving and sticking automatic machine guns in your face?  What happens if they trip or something?

Bella from the Twilight saga is a pretty obvious choice. For being a main character, she is very dull. Also, Gollum from Lord Of The Rings.

Every sitcom wife. Beyoncé Knowles. Bertram from Family Guy. Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire. Johnny Depp in Alice in Wonderland. Carrie Bradshaw. Any "hot chick" character in any college comedy. The Boondock Saints. The oxygen that Jeff Dunham breathes.

I could spend my weekend responding to this prompt.

All James Bond villains for being completely incompetent fools.

Cadsuane (Wheel of Time) for being an utter b*tch who deserves to die screaming than be revived only to die screaming again. And again and again...

The Goa'uld of Stargate SG1 for being utterly and hopelessly incompetent fools.

Most patients in House M.D

The entire cast of that first Narnia movie, may it die of smallpox

Dana Scully of the X-Files for being a hypocrite

The list goes on and on and on... You see, annoying myself while watching or reading stuff is one of my most beloved hobbies.

That whole race is annoying. They have forcefield tech and blue and explosive EMP-or-something whatevers, but they pretty much ride horses and use slings... Oh! And the kid from that movie with the kid in it... It would please me to see his guts decorate someone's spaceship.

Debra Morgan, on Dexter, I simply can't stand her.
Pretty much all of Walter White's family including in-laws. Unlike Debra though I don't think we are really supposed to like them.

I love Forrest Gump, but despise Jenny with a passion also. Watching Twilight I wish Edward or Jacob would kill Bella, rip her stupid little head off! (Cause she is a lame character, not cause I have the hots for the guys! lol)

Movies where a girl is running from the killer and trips, then he ends up getting her. (to many to name)
AND movies where people split up to find "help". (again, to many to name)

No way a person would take all that shit from House and still be friends, let alone still giving a crap about his personal life. Also, he had an awkward relationship with Cuddy too- inappropriate for a boss/employee relationship.

House though, combined with Dr. Cox from Scrubs, are my heroes. Speaking of Scrubs, the acapela singing assistant to Dr. Kelso was annoying. Ted, I think.

I've only ever like Grissom as the main characters on any of the CSIs. Lawrence Fishburne's character sucked, this guy (if it's who I'm thinking of) on Miami sucks and the guy from CSI:New York- Lieutenant Dan- sucked as well.

Any female character who is competent for their first two scenes and then falls to pieces at the end of the movie so the male characters can "save" them.

Really any supposedly main character who is not a real person nor given a story/struggle for the audience to empathize with. These are what we call "plot moving characters" who's existence is predicated on how much use they can be to the actual main character who is again usually a young white guy with a sword/gun/ohanddidimentionhehasapenis etc...  though it does happen in other genres.

Examples of plot moving characters include: Jar Jar, Everyone in the D&D movie except the young white guy with the sword (does it matter what his name is?), the Asian azgaurdian from Thor, Jimmy Olsen, Neytiri from Avatar (what the heck was her motivation for anything?), The Colonel from Avatar (again, why?)... etc... etc...

Obviously any story can have extras or scenery characters or characters who have small parts, it's the characters who have main parts and a lot of screen time and yet are less than half a dimension that annoy the crapola out of me.

Larry the Cable Guy bugs the crap out of me partially because I don't find him funny and partially because of how cynical the character's existence is. Instead of Daniel Whitney doing well based on his comedy, he's successful because he tapped into the same strange cultural zeitgeist as the likes of Rush Limbaugh and televangelists. He panders to predominately white, Southern audiences by playing the "I'm simple, and you worship simple" card. Something about it really just bothers me.

But I agree that the guy from CSI Miami is the most annoying. The guy can't act and overdose the drama.

Every single Character from Avatar, I'd say! Including the main guy. By the time I was twenty minutes in I could already see the entire plot panning out ahead of me: who was going to get redeemed, who was going to die, who was going to die and get redeemed, and in exactly what order. This was partly because of how formulaic it was but also because of the obvious, cheesy, go-green agenda behind it, which is never a good basis for a story. 'Messages' of any kind instantly make characters 2-dimensional, points in an argument rather than people, and plots predictable.

Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged is another example of this. The characters in that book pissed me off massively with their bland, black and white obviousness. So does Ayn Rand, come to think of it, and so does 'objectivism'.

It's a stigma attachted to women who are almost never the main hero.... It's annoying.

But specifically Cloud from final fantasy 7. There is such a burning hatred for him. He isn't even his own character. He stole Zack's identity. He just sucks as a main hero. Bleeh.

I gotta say yeah. No one in that movie was a person, not even sigourney, how sad is that? Sigourney could be in a movie and do nothing other than sit and stare at a blank wall and she'd still be a person to me. They actually had to subvert her inherent three-dimensionality in that movie.

Wendy Torrance from The Shining.  Like a whiny and whingeing cross between Olive Oyl and Kat from Eastenders, who needed "correcting".

The Saxons in King Arthur, especially the leader, Cerdic.  For a start of Cerdic was a leader of the West Saxons, who founded the Kingdom of Wessex, which is on the opposite side of the country to Hadrians Wall.

In the movie Cerdic mentions about not breeding with the Britons, hence diluting their good Saxon blood.  But Cerdic is a Briton name, and there is a theory that it was Cerdic, not Vortigern, who was the British chief who married a Saxon, and invited them over as allies to fight against rival British kingdoms.

The main female character from Cold Case.  Can't listen to her voice, watched it one time with my mom.  Never again.

Any male character who can't function in society without his intelligent, always correct, clear thinking, save the day, generally overbearing wife.  Generally sitcoms.  (I hate sitcoms)

Examples:

The King of Queens
Home Improvement
Everybody loves Raymond (my personal most hated show)

I will admit to watching most of those for a bit, but I quickly got tired of them. I always thought Home improvement should have been just the tool time bits, just a spoof of the low budget home improvement show, sort of like Red Green.

The bit that stuck in my mind was when she was back tracking up the stairs, meekly waving a baseball bat, crying (as usual), while Jack was ranting at her about his responsiblities, etc.  I personally thought he raised a few good points.  But most of the women I know, would have just stood their ground and gave him a clout.

I know I've already gone, possibly twice, but I can always think of more:

1) All gay, male characters in recent mainstream media. There was a time when homosexual men in particular were represented as villains - malevolent, scheming, surreptitious etc. - but that seems far more flattering than the kind of fluffy, background comic relief that they're generally put up as today. At least the villains had depth. I'd rather be perceived as a 'bad guy' than as someone too stupid and shallow to possess any defining flaws at all.

2) All characters from American sitcoms - Scrubs, Friends, Frasier etc. - without exception. They always have to permeate the humour with a bit of cheesy seriousness, a few "today I've learned something new about friendship" moments, because apparently we're a load of foamy-mouthed children and we need that sort of nannying. One day, in the long forgotten past, some cocaine-addled schizophrenic executive must have received wisdom from above that people were looking to situation comedies - shows that implicit a feeling of smug superiority in the face of other people's suffering and embarrassment - for lessons on optimism and team spirit, but that this itching demand simply wasn't being met. Our man must have then taken it upon himself to change that, while everyone else, seeing that he was insane, had the good sense not to argue. I can think of no better explanation for this bullshit occurring.

3) All the faces of TV journalism in the developed world, who ought to count in this game if only because they're fictional. And I'd list them for a similar reason as above: their maddening preoccupation with what we can take away from this or that violent catastrophe.

4) All protagonists, to some degree, annoy me. So often they're trying to unravel the meaning of their lives, or the answer to some nagging question about themselves, usually with an overblown and vain sense of importance about what the answer will be. "Am I a monster!? Is my destiny good or evil? WHO AM I!?!?" etc. So much energy wasted on nothing.

That'll do. Sorry. This is what boredom does to me.

Andy Dick. I don't know how I didn't think of him before. Sure, he's a person, but the characters he plays are all horrible. Even when he's supposed to be himself i think he's playing a character.  Every time I've ever seen him I've wanted to throw up in my mouth a little bit. He is truly the epitome of all that is annoying and unfunny in this world.

Soap operas, I just really dislike the way their plots twist and turn, as if the general audience wouldn't interest themselves in it if it didn't. I guess the producers are right. Without all the cliffhangers, somewhat predictable events and shallow characters, I doubt anybody would.

Have you read it? I'm 8 pages in and I'd have left Steele on the floor :)

Is he murderous? That actually increases my desire to read the book slightly.  I thought it was just porn, I didn't realize it had a plot.

It has an infantile plot, of sorts, and at one point the evil ... no - no spoilers, but someone is a bit naughty.

I got it free for my Kindle off TUEBL (http://tuebl.com/) and I actually read all 3 volumes, mainly to know what all the fuss is about.  It's just a fairy-tale romance with all the clichés, liberally laced with kinky sex.

eff that noise, what's all the fuss about then? or are people just starting to admit they like porn.

If you are romantically minded, I supposed you'd go for Prince-Charming-woos-humble-virgin-and-undergoes-many-heartbreaks-and-then-all-live-happily-ever-after.  There was just enough porn in it to keep me going to the end, despite the fairytale plot.

You managed to keep it going till the end of the book! I'm impressed.  :D

It was only the naughty stuff that strengthened me.  I wish I hadn't; the last bit is much, much more ickle-dickle pukemaking than the rest.

It's crap from the little bit I've read and reviews like OGs are common. My wife described it as Mills & Boon with fucking.

That Phoenix dude in Gladiator. Just takes me out of an otherwise decent movie. And Razumikhin from Crime and Punishment. Fucking do-gooder. Leave the man alone! What's worse than someone that's all bright and sunny when you're in a deep funk? If you're a real friend, leave him alone and be there when he calls for you.

I was somewhat interested in reading it until I found out that it was essentially heavily edited Twilight slash fiction. I...I just can't do it.

OMFSM - not the Furby!  Anything but that.  I'd rather they dug up Cliff Richard.

I struggle with this statement, because it conflicts with my belief that anything with porn can't be all bad.

IIRC you borrowed that dictum from Aristotle's Πόρνογραφια, the great Pornographia.  Anyhow, you're right.

Okay, so I have started sort of paging through 50SofG (but only the dirty bits; I can't be bothered to read the actual story) and I have to say that Christian Grey reminds me very much of a male member of this board but I will NEVER say who.   ;D  Stew on that for a while, fellas.   ;D

I vote for Recusant. He oozes charisma but there is a hint of menace about him.

Again, I haven't read it straight through, just kind of flipped around, but it makes me giggle how often Ana says "Holy Shit" and bites her lip.  That's like her default response to everything the sinister Mr Grey does.

E_R - You can guess and vote all you want.  I'm not telling (except DJ.)

I haven't got to the mucky bits yet. I'm still at the the 'Steele as a rabbit in the headlights' bit at the moment.

I just burned 50SoG onto CDs for the wife (I'm too cheap to buy the audiobook) after buying her the ebook.  I did however insist that she not listen to them while driving.

You know, in retrospect I probably should have put the audiobook on her Nook instead...

Hey thanks, I appreciate the info!

I do buy a book occasionally from the booksellers, just to keep 'em around.
