I'll tell you what, this place has a very high proportion of females in my experience of this type of forum. Now active (posting) members are mainly man. When you get to your 50 start some female centric threads and cultivate involvement of the women here.
okay.

This is an interesting topic, actually. Why do you think so few members of the female gender participate in debate oriented forums, typically? Even on this forum, 18.1:1 seems to call for an explanation.

I'm not sure if the proportion is correct, it doesn't feel right.
Looking at the list of members there are a lot of members with 0 posts, maybe this has something to do with the forum changeover. They are listed as lurkers many seem genderless. I'm wondering if the stats haven't been distorted by spammers, hit and run theists or something.
the proportion in the stats is going to be off for probably a year (or more...who knows)....there were a few thousand people registered when I moved the site to SMF and for all I know it assumed they all are male when figuring stats.
I don't know why it's hard to attract females to atheist/freethought....locally (in dallas/fort worth) we have no problem...most of our organizers/activists are women)
I wonder what the ratio of men to women is in the group that considers themselves atheist. (in America)

all of america...I haven't seen data on that.
I do know that the common story floating around it that women are not well represented in the atheist community and when we are the men treat us like sex objects that can be used to attract more men to the group. But I say this knowing I'm repeating the pissed off feminist atheist commentary on he way things are.
Locally we are actually really close to even.... i'd say 40% women /60% men; I can get actual stats if I ask. The only reason why it's not 50/50 is that most of the singles are men (children are a good mix of male female)
If the stats show that women are less likely to be atheists, I wonder what the reasons are.

probably patriarchy
if a woman is taught to think she needs to fall in line with expectations she would be less likely to express her disagreement with popular religious ideas.
But I think if that is the case then things are changing...quickly.
For what it's worth, the Pew "U. S. Religious Landscape Survey" (http://religions.pewforum.org/reports) (2007) states that:
QuoteMen are significantly more likely than women to claim no religious affiliation. Nearly one-in-five men say they have no formal religious affiliation, compared with roughly 13% of women.
The thing is, "no religious affiliation" does not equal "atheist." However, according to this table (http://religions.pewforum.org/pdf/table-gender-by-tradition.pdf) (PDF) from the same survey, of those who identified themselves as atheist, 70% were men and 30% were women.
I think that women have have greater sense of survival than men. Religious gatherings may provide the security to enhance this greater instinct. I have no research to back this assumption, but it might explain why women are less inclined to admit there atheism.
i am a man-wannabe female!
Male here. I have no real data to back this up but it seems that women in general aren't that into forums/message boards.
As for women in atheism I really don't know. I only know of three confirmed atheists in real life, my two friends and their father. I am pretty sure their mother is too, she certainly isn't affiliated with any church nor does she seem to care about religion but I can't recall her ever really confirming her atheism.

Maybe all the women are on forums you aren't interested in. I am a member of Netmum, Mumsnet and Natural Mamas who are mostly women, and another private little forum which is exclusively female. Parenting, particularly with babies and toddlers can be very isolating and internet forums can really help.

I guess it sort of depends on what you consider doing well in prison. The prospect of three square meals, infinite reading time, and paid rent is inviting enough as it is; throw in group showers with a bunch of sexually depraved weight lifters and it sounds a heck of a lot more appealing than the daily grind to me.
Having long hair would be an asset. You'd probably get adopted by some shank wielding Romeo, and end up unscathed (say for a forcibly retired gag reflex). Winning.

are likely male and have no life besides.

As
Tank said earlier in the thread (http://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=7540.msg114942#msg114942), HAF actually seems to have a higher proportion of women than similar places on the net. That may have something to do with the name of the forum, as well as the conscious effort made by members and staff to maintain a civil atmosphere here, as opposed to many other fora where harsh rhetoric and blatant or thinly veiled
ad hominems are the norm. I'm not saying that women aren't into that kind of approach, but I think that statistically, men may get more of a kick out of it. ::) Thus this place may more accurately reflect the actual proportions of self-identified male and female atheists than others. As the survey results that I posted links to earlier (http://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=7540.msg115021#msg115021) indicate, the proportions here, according to the current results of
Willow's poll are not that different from national results in the US.
Then again, we have members from all parts of the world, so I guess that shoots my hypothesis down. (https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg826.imageshack.us%2Fimg826%2F4195%2Flolbymissbangles.gif&hash=a459a670b2fef67538964246ce892a4b5f7d96e2)

Recusant's explanation makes sense to me. I don't think forums, themselves, are a "guy" thing. I've participated in many forums (wedding, fertility, baby, etc) that have been probably 95% or more female.

You better not get any of that on the HAF carpet.
There have been enough health code violations around here

Many of the guys are turgidly boring bastards so I don't count them anyway. ;)
I view myself as turgidly stimulating. Turgidly erotic, even. But, yeah, turgid. 8)

One hundred percent boy. ;D

What, Optimus Prime was not available..? ???
Why would you want human as a vessel? Surely, one which could fly and breathe under water would be... Cooler? :D

What kind of vessel? Do you drink coffee out of it? Go sailing in it? And if you've just
taken it, perhaps you should give it back.

I can lend you a snorkel if one of your evil plans require breathing under water.
If you need to fly I could probably make you a Zeppelin, I have a lot of old plastic bags under the sink.

I used my last hydrogen last month but I know where to get some, you'll need the snorkel to get it though.
Juliet seems to be being a bit negative today, or is this an exploding Zeppelin attack on unsuspecting fools?

Unsuspecting fools. Look how casual all of those people standing around are. You'd think a giant, flaming pontoon of death might cause them to, um, I dunno, move out of the way.

Hey. It is cool to be religious. You get to make up bullshit and people will nod their heads in agreement with you. In fact, it's easier to influence people when you are religious than not.
