Salutes from Argentina

Hello everyone, my name is Gabriel, and I´m a new atheist.  As most argentines, I grew up in a catholic enviroment.  My father was always indifferent to religion or to belifs; my mother on the contrary is the typical truthseeker jumping from pseudoreligions and sects back and forth.  Having this type of mother had me seeking "the truth" for many years with the logic outcome.  I tried roman catholicism, I tried judaism, I tried gnosticism, spiritualism, ufology, etc... to no avail.  To make a long story short, since I´m a passionate reader, one lucky day a year ago a quotation in a book I was reading had me look Richard Dawkins up, and read some of his works.  They had left an indeleble mark in me and got me to come to the realization that god was created by man, for political and economic reasons, and that most religios people and truthseekers just live in delusion or madness.

I still have a hard time with accepting myself as an atheist, for I live in a predominantly catholic country -I even graduiated form a catholic university-, and because I tend to have conservative views of politics which sometimes crush with the atheist mainstream, and because atheism in Argentina is linked to marxism, comunism, socialism, or progresism... views of politics with which I mostly disagree with.  I still regard the Roman Catholic Church as a valuart of western civilization.

Well I hope I can learn from other atheists in this forum.

Welcome!  :yay:

I know what you mean about having a hard time accepting yourself as an atheist, though I had different reasons.
