For whatever reason, this song from Marty Robbins makes me think of Ali.

As far as voices go, Marty was, IMHO, the best.

Earlier this week I ran into an old high school friend, someone I hadn't seen for several years. After we talked for a bit and caught up with things he let me know that an old friend of ours had passed away late last year.

I was surprised to hear this, he was only a couple of years older than me, maybe 51 or 52 when he died. Heart-attack. He had three kids and two grandchildren. I didn't really know him that well, or rather we really hadn't stayed in touch over the years; I probably haven't seen him in over 20 years, he was really more of a "friend of a friend", but we certainly had some great times together.

One time that really sticks out to me is from back in the early 80's. A group of us went to see "Humble Pie" at a small theatre in Detroit. Tickets we had weren't that bad, I mean any seats in this theatre were good, and the acoustics were awesome, but him and I decided to try and get as close to the stage as we could, so we snuck are way forward and were able to find two spots right about the 5th row, almost dead center.

The place was packed, filled with smoke and the crowd was jumpy and excited, and the two of us were stoked to be so close to the stage. Then the announcer called out, "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, HUMBLE FUCKING PIE"!

And here came Steve Marriott and crew. What a show. At one point the sound system started to fizzle, and finally it just died. Ole' Steve was plenty mad about it, and he tossed a few things around stage as the sound crew scramble to get things corrected, and then Steve simply walked up to the front of the stage and started to sing without a microphone, just his raw voice, and the thing that surprised us more than anything, was above all of that noise we could still hear him, even make out the words to the song, and the crowd got even wilder. (Later even our friends who were still sitting in the back of the theatre said they could hear him)
It was amazing, he was right there almost in front of me, singing, screaming at the top of his lungs. Then the sound came back on and the rest of the band joined in and they played: 30 Days In the Hole
