Oh my god, that's horrible. If any teacher ever laid a hand on my child, I'd put them through a wall. And I'm a pretty laid back guy.

Corporal punishment's legality should be challenged immediately. If you live in Missouri, Kentucky, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee or Florida, it might be good to write your representative and explain that their constitutions' children are being beaten by government-paid teachers.

I think a teacher who spanked a student here would be out of job in days and would probably not be allowed to teach again for years.

Yet I think a much bigger problem is all those kids being beaten at home by those closest to them. Domestic violence is a big issue. It's just hidden enough for only the tip of the iceberg to show.

Our school's policy is that parents have to sign permission slips if they will allow corp. punishment, and they are contacted immediately before the punishment is given.

I think it's ineffective punishment for a myriad of reasons, most of which have already been named.

Funny how the only two careers in America that require adults to spank other people are high school principal and porn star.

Yikes.  I guess rule 34 applies to emoticons, too.

Yeah, I saw this on the news last week. I had no idea it was legal in the first place. That's so ridiculous! But when you really think about it, it's not surprising. Our country is so screwed up.
When life gives you lemons, make orange juice and let the world wonder how you did it.

Disciplining MY child is MY responsibility.  I very, very, very rarely spank and then I never do it while I am mad.  There are very few transgressions that warrant such a punishment and I don't feel that the school's definition of misbehaving, whatever it may be, is one of them.  If my son is causing that much of a problem they can call me or his mother and we will come handle it.

In case anyone was wondering, this is what good parenting looks like. Now that I think of it, some of the most responsible and capable parents I can think of are on this forum. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Faithless

I got paddled in junior high for talking back to my teacher.  I had to go up to the front of the class and bend over while he got out this huge paddle with holes in it.  He whacked me three times with it in front of everyone.  It HURT!!  I was very proud of myself that I only sniffled a few times and didn't cry.

Back then it was perfectly legal.  It was also very effective.  I never talked back to that teacher again.  I did talk back to the teachers who didn't have paddles.

I know a guy who was hit by a teacher once when he was about 11, I think. He just hit back with all he had. Naturally, he was dragged off to the principal and the parents were called in and all that and it all came down to the kid defending against an attacker so he got off without as much as a warning while the teacher came this much closer to getting fired.
