My wife and I will visit New York in the middle of October and I want to surprise her with a wonderful meal in a romantic restaurant. Since it is my first time in NYC, I hope that I could get some recommendations from you guys. For me money is not a real issue, but the place should not be too stiff and if possible it should not be mandatory for me to wear a tie there (a jacket is OK).

Thanks in advance for you help,

Tom

Sorry I can't make any recommendations, Tom, but here's a website that may help you.

Much of the information is free online, or you could pick up a Zagat guide in book form.  When will you be moving to the U.S.?  I hope you have your shipping/moving issues all sorted out.

Don't pass up the opportunity to eat at Les Halles. Anthony Bourdain! He claims to have the best steak frites in the world.

Thanks for the tip! My wife found out about Zagat as well, and opened a premium account there. With her log-in ID I managed to find several interesting places to eat in New York and Washington DC. Talking about Washington, my goal is to move there around autumn next year. There are still a couple of things to be arranged, like my social security ID and work permit. The shipping/moving issues are luckily all sorted out. There is of course a lot of stuff that I'll need to sell, before going to the US (like electrical appliances, my car and furniture). I just hope that I can get a good price for them.

Sounds indeed like a great place to me, but more for a  casual visit than a romantic dinner. According to some reviews that I've read, the place seems to to be quite crowded, noisy and warm. Since we're staying a couple of days in New York, we could make a reservation there for one of our lunch meals.
