OK, you might just try to catch them and risk a bowl or three I suppose, but that's no fun there!

Hmm, assumption made the bowls are ceramic, not plastic.

It could depend on how it opens up, if it slides, it might be possible to open it jut enough to get an arm in there to adjust them.

If it swings open it would be a riskier problem, but less so if there are two so that you open one while holding the other closed and reach in and adjust the plates. If it's the only one and it swings open, then other measures.

If side hinged - have a large sheet of stiff but thinnish card ready, just crack the door enough to slide it in to support the bowls?

Yes, that should work I think.

Also, if the glass is worth less than the plates, then maybe just cutting a hole into the glass and replacing it after would be an option.

Open the door 1/4" and fill expanding with polyurethane foam. Wait to set. Open door and cut the plates out of the foam.

Nope, looking at the picture again the gap between the shelf and the glass is too large. The two or three plates furthest off would fall at the slightest door opening.

Like your thinking, Tank, but a bit drastic and same problem as above applies as you open the door.

You could drill a hole somewhere and squirt it in I suppose . . .

I love open thinkfests!

Solution:

Remove the cabinet from the wall.

Carefully set it on it's back.

Open.

Retrieve unbroken dishes.

Brilliant Joe!

Providing fixing screws are available from outside the cabinet.

Or you use a large pry-bar. Like I did on the old water heater when I first moved here. Wall mended up a treat.
