Yes, I've noticed your style.

Yes, I do see your point Magdalena. But I don’t take back what I said to Ricardo. He has been around for a number of years now, using various names and avatars. He can still be seen in a few other forums under the name of Ricardo and using the same avatar he used here. He has posted in various chat forums, an astronomy forum and a hobby forum. The more you feed him (and posters like him) the more he will reply,
He managed to put out 37 posts until you Magdalena put a stop to him by posting:

No, it's OK. You can talk about these subjects, just not with me. I don't enjoy it, but I'm sure others do. I like to talk about religious things maybe once every 3 or 4 years.
:thumbsup2:

If something like this had been posted sooner or if his post had been ignored he perhaps would have disappeared sooner! I don’t know!

You should've said this about him. I didn't know. I don't think anyone knew this. We thought he was a genuine poster, gave him the benefit of the doubt. This is why I couldn't understand why so much "hate" from you. It didn't make sense to "hate" someone without knowing anything about them, but I guess you guys go waaayyyy back. Now I know.

sup, red cloud?
im not a member of any clique here, and i'll talk about religion with you.

what do you see as the most important topic to start with?

Well thank you billy rubin 8) I'm pleased that nasty spider didn't get you!
I will post something later that we can chat about . . .

Hello RC and BR.

What you've got to realise is that most of the long-serving members of this forum have done the subject of Religion to death. There's not an angle or a topic that hasn't been discussed many times. There're loads of threads you can see going back years that contain brilliant discussion. And some brilliantly amusing trolls, and religitards floating all the arguments and counter-arguments you can imagine and many you can't. The more things change in the world, the more they stay the same.

So, you're more than welcome to start discussions on any topic you choose, but perhaps the reason you may not get much in the way of vigorous discussion is that its not particularly interesting any more.

*my opinion only of course.

yes, ive seen that before.

itz where i am with religion, in fact.

yet there are contradictions that are hard to escape. morality, for example. most atheists i know consider themselves to have a moral underpinning to their beliefs, but cant defend it logically. theists have them beat there.

Haha, I'm not really the person to engage with if you want to make arguments based on moralistic judgements. But objective morality its a subject I very much enjoyed exploring.

we might explore it then.

im always interested in how people approach this subject.

what exactly do you mean when you say "objective morality?"

Morality based on something other than opinion, personal preference or social conditioning.
What morals do you have that don't fall into one of the above?

But, banned for derailing. 😂

i don't have any genuine morals. i don't believe in them. i do have certain behaviours that i practise, and others i avoid, but there's no justification for doing so based on any reasoning that i think is valid.

by your definition above, i'm thinking that your use of "objective morals" means something like "derived from an external source that gives it authority?"

i've never been able to come up with more than three possible sources for morality:

--aesthetics and emotion

-- natural selection for social cohesion

-- theism

only the last two of these could be objective, but the first might correspond to your personal preference, and the second might derive from your social conditioning.

i've never been able to figure out how i might use the word "objective" for what i mean when i talk about morals, so i tend to avoid the word.

banned for encouraging me

I think we're on the same sheet.

If you want further reading, an old member, Stevil, always framed this idea in much better terms than I ever could.

Quote from: Stevil
To get the record straight, I don't believe in morality. I think it is a make believe human made concept. You cannot test for it and you cannot measure it. It is simply a way of categorising human actions into good (right), bad (wrong) and neutral. The thing is, when we start categorising, we all tend to have different lists. There certainly is no absolute standard of right and wrong, so when we categorise, we are using different standards to do this. Some people use the golden rule, others a perception of what humanism is, others use the teachings of the enlightenment of Buddha, others use the teachings of Mohammad, others the teachings of Jesus and others the teachings of the Old Testament, etc.

I guess, people by and large have a desire to be good. The problem is that there is no way of telling what is good from what is bad. I feel this is a driving force behind why people take up religion. They quickly learn that the definition of good differs from person to person hence they realise that they cannot trust themselves and hence they look to the wise. However the problem with the wise is that one wise person's morality differs from anothers. Human defined morality is a problem in that one person's morality is no better or no worse than another's. Thousands of years old religion that claims to know what is good, inspired by a perfect and all good deity becomes a compelling guide. If a person chooses to believe in the deity and believe in the specific religion then their problem of defining good goes away, thus they can now work towards being a good person.

An atheist doesn't have the deity option. An atheist looking for morality must either look for a principle, a wise person/organisation or must trust themselves.

The dangerous side to belief in morality is that morality doesn't stop at the self. Morality leads towards judgement of others, as people are now making bold claims as to whether others are acting morally or immorally. If a person stopped at only the self, they would be defining their own personal values rather than morality. Once people go down that dangerous path of moral judgement of others, they then look to enforce moral rules on others, so they put this into law.

Morality based law will result in oppression, which will result in conflict, which will result in danger for those living within that moral based society.
All religious wars are due to an insistence of pushing a flavour of morality onto others.

I am a strong proponent for defining a clear and specific goal for law. I would rather law act towards creating a stable and functional society rather than a moral one. With this goal in mind it would be hard to justify law against homosexuality, or polygomy, or pornography, or prostitution, or euthanasia, or against religious freedom. You don't have to agree with these things, you would just have to realise that it isn't your place to prevent others from doing them.

Banned for not taking the hint and taking this to another thread.

Yes, I do see your point, Magdalena. But I don’t take back what I said to Ricardo. He has been around for a number of years now, using various names and avatars. He can still be seen in a few other forums under the name of Ricardo and using the same avatar he used here. He has posted in various chat forums, an astronomy forum, and a hobby forum. The more you feed him (and posters like him) the more he will reply,
He managed to put out 37 posts until you Magdalena put a stop to him by posting:

I've been thinking, my friend...
I don't think...No. Wait...I think...that's not the quote that made Ricardo go away, I think it's the one where I questioned his faith:

I'm from Brazil! I have never participated in an atheist forum! I hope to learn more about atheism! Can this forum also learn about skepticism?
Ricardo...Ricardito...Are you a religious person?
I ask because when you start a sentence with: "a theistic friend told me he has two arguments against atheism..."--It's like when I ask: "Is marijuana bad for you? I have "a friend" who wants to know. ... :shifty:
So, are you a religious person? You sound like one.
I'm an atheist agnostic! I have so many theistic friends!
why don't you believe me? be honest!
You are full of Christ.
It just shows.

Tell me, was my statement a compliment, or an insult?

Is being "full of Christ!" An insult or a compliment?
As an atheist, I take it as a: "God bless you!" --from a Christia or a Jehovah witness...If you know what I mean.

 :snicker:

Admitting it's a compliment, means he is religious. If he's an atheist--like the honey badger--he don't give a shit.
...BUT...
Admitting it's an insult, is a betrayal to his god, again, if he is religious.

Yes?

... It appears to me that this place you call your “Camelot”, your “Elysium” is nothing more that a clique of like minded friends, made up of no more than a dozen members. Hardly any of the many other members ever post anything.
...
I'm sad to admit this is exactly what I thought of this place when I joined 9 or 10 yrs ago.
 :therethere:
I've left so many times... :felix: Tank, how many times have I left because I'm not happy here?
I've lost count.

Don't go, Red_Cloud, or just  take a break from us if you must, but come back.
Oh, and  :secrets1: try to not insult people too much. I know it's fun, believe me I want to do the same sometiemes...Well, many times...

Oh, speaking of that, I ban No one, "Baking fail ban." What does that even mean?

Twice that I noticed.
