Fake News (Split from Political Picture Dump)
« on: July 28, 2019, 10:50:15 PM »
DO yourself a favor and spend a few minutes reading about the program in Finland that sets out to make themselves immune to social media  false claims and "fake news". https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2019/05/europe/finland-fake-news-intl/

I hope that you can access this. It is worth reading.  It makes me angry to find still more evidence that the Finns are way smarter than Americans.

They're on the right track. I'm afraid that would never work in the USA. It would require the government to actually do something, and for the populace to be educated and literate on the issues involved. Quite sad, actually, that things have degraded so much.

Is there any  news that you can trust nowadays? Even CNN produced fake news and most items that I see on the news are heavily biased.

It gets better if you try to avoid opinion pieces. Of course that naturally means cutting out 99% of conservative leaning news.

I guess that is also true for 99% of non-conservative news.

Not anywhere near as much. Conservatives don't like facts (or at most selectively choose the facts they like), because it interferes with what they want the world to be like.

Strange, that is what the conservatives also think about the people on the left.  I think that both groups do have interesting facts to offer that are plausible but not correct.

Strange, you seem to think there are only two groups. That misconception is an example of how conservatives avoid facts so that they can pretend to live in a simpler world.

I guess that is also true for 99% of non-conservative news.

If you irrationally conflate "not conservative news" with "left news" then you're blinding yourself to reality and/or very selectively choosing which facts you will accept.

That are a lot of assumptions instead of facts. What makes you think that I believe that there are only 2 groups? I come from a country that has more political parties than most people in USA can even dream of.  Most Americans don't even seem to know the difference between socialism and communism. I'm not a conservative either. Yes, I do share some of their economic opinions, but disagree with them on many issues (like gun control, education, healthcare, environmental responsibility, etc.)

The facts that make it appear that that is what you're doing, is that you said these things:
I guess that is also true for 99% of non-conservative news.

Strange, that is what the conservatives also think about the people on the left.  I think that both groups do have interesting facts to offer that are plausible but not correct.

First thing here, you say that non-conservative news has the same amount of opinion pieces as conservative news. Note here you brought the "left" group into the discussion and then said, "I think that both groups[...]"

That's why it appears that you're doing that (the faulty dichotomy). Because based on what you said, you're doing that. Don't like those facts? Just ignore them, no big deal.

I don't see how this is relevant. You're bringing in a lot of tangential things and I don't see a rational connection. It would be great if conservative economic policies were more of a doing what they say kind of thing instead of saying one thing and the wasting billions of dollars on stupid things. I don't know every single country and their conservatives, but of all the ones I am familiar with, I've only seen the hypocritical version of "conservative economic policies." So if your place has the non-hypocritical kind, then that's like a unicorn congratulations.

Also, even if you were to have named "left" news as having 99% opinion pieces (even though that would still be irrational), I have read a lot of both and I don't feel like you have because you arrived at that judgment. Conservative news bases their opinions on other opinion pieces, it's like opinion pieces all the way down. And then they come around acting like every one else is ignoring facts and reality. There are "left" opinion pieces that do the same thing, but we're not talking about finding an example here and there, wouldn't want to commit more falacies. I'd say that about 75% of "left" news is opinion pieces (most of which still cite actual facts instead of other opinion pieces), while conservative news is almost completely opinion pieces that cite other opinion pieces that cite other opinion pieces... etc. until you find the baseless tweet that started everything. It's also common knowledge that most conservative news denies science.

Always question all authorities because the authority you don't question is the most dangerous... except me, never question me.

Sorry Tom, you've been enfiladed by Davin's righteous replies.
But Davin was mostly aiming where Tom wasn't.
That comment is 98.4% conservative opinion piece.

This 'fake news' discussion probably merits a thread of its own. I suggest we split this topic.
