Title: This Crisis Will Test The Leaders (Warning! Contains Vitriol)
Post by: xSilverPhinx on March 25, 2020, 09:36:22 PM
Let me start by telling you an origin story.

It starts with an animated orange with fake Barbie hair implants running for presidential office in the US. This orange was able to contort his facial butthole and scream "Make America great again" so effectively that gradually he would win over supporters. He won the presidential race and moved into the White House.

One day before a private meeting with Putin, the orange accidentally took a few laxatives instead of Viagra and had to rush to the toilet. When his servant finished wiping his crack and was about to flush the toilet, a nasty piece of shit jumped out and stood before the orange.

"Who are you, diarrhea squirt?" the orange asked.

"Jair Bolsonaro", the shit replied.

"I'll forget that fast. Off you go to Brazil. You will be advised by my strategists so that you can run for president and win...and when you do, don't forget who your daddy is."

And with that the fecal matter did just as he was told, and thus began a beautiful relationshit between the orange the the proxy created in his image.

Fast forward to the coronavirus crisis. Jair "Bozo" Bolsonaro is being swept under the rug by state governors and city mayors due to his alarming ineptitude and ignorance and he's not happy. So, yesterday, in an official address to the nation he says that coronavirus is "just a mere flu virus", and that even though he's over 60 years old he's an athlete so it isn't a danger to him. He attacks science and the media (again and again). He says that if other government officials/public health experts try to isolate him it's a coup. To top the smelly turd cake he says he wants to end social isolation, reopening schools and getting commerce working again.

I...don't really know what to think about this. I wonder if it's even possible someone can be that level of imbecilic or if he has another agenda. But for now his motives don't matter. He is potentially causing confusion in the population and great future harm.

Bolsominions are becoming fewer in number at least. There has been a huge falling out between him and government officials because of his inane comments.

I'm really hopeful this will lead to an impeachment based on clear ineptitude to lead the country in this crisis. Instead of just sitting quietly under the rug with all the other garbage and letting the health experts and local governments (since central leadership is lacking) come up with guidelines and policies, he just has to try to be the center of attention again.

That would be impressive, though who will take his place?

If Bolsonaro is losing support, should be a good sign. In the US the approval rating for the presidential embarrassment has improved.  ::)

In theory, the vice president would take his place should he be impeached. But I don't know. This parasite doesn't look like he'll just leave without a fight, and he has the support of some military factions (he made sure to include them in his government...the vice is a general). Support from the population is another story...Just a couple of weeks ago he tried to get his supporters on the streets against Congress. Not many showed up.

This crisis will test Brazilian institutions as well, which seem really weak to me. We'll see if they can keep Bolsonaro and his military stooges from taking over.

Is there anywhere in the world where the approval rating for the president/prime minister has improved? ::)

Tom. my country may very well be getting the government that we deserve.

It is clear enough that we have an enormous contingent of people who are not too bright.  We have legions of citizens who sincerely believe that our psychopathic president is in office because of Gods will.  No shit.  For some inexplicable reason our evangelicals believe that "The Donald" is the best thing that has ever happened to our country.

That the committed Christians hold Trump in such high esteem is  mind boggling.  Our guy is a pathological liar who lies even when the truth would fit better. He is profane, insulting to anyone who questions him, ignores his advisors, and claims to be a "stable genius".   Why are those people so intent on putting the teachings of their bible aside in  order to excuse the reprehensible behavior that is strictly forbidden in the good book?

Not to pick on the religious right exclusively.  We have dumb ass rednecks who are equally supportive of a leader who is his own worst enemy. More than that, he is the worst enemy of the rational conduct of our government and our nation.

Bolsonaro can not top Trumps irrational stupidity.  Sorry Silver, your guy can not be as ill tempered, corrupt, and mendacious a snake oil salesman as our guy.  Here is a virtual hug for you.

Hi Icarus, here's a virtual hug for you too

I don't agree that Trump is more irrational and stupid than Bolsonaro. Trump may be a pea-brain, but Bolsonaro is a no-brain...and I'll tell you why.

While Trump has backtracked on his previous statements against social isolation, Bolsonaro continues to insist that schools, churches and companies large and small should be reopened. Today, he went to take selfies with his crowd of supporters. Today, he said he "wants to spare lives" but "we all die anyway". This past week, he spent the equivalent of US$1 million on pro-government propaganda when that money could have been better spent on countless things such as respirators, face masks, food for the needy...anything fucking useful. It's not like Brazil has loads of extra money to spend on fucking propaganda.

That kind of thing pisses me off like you won't believe. Spending that much money on pro-Bolsonaro propaganda in which he tells people to end their social isolation

It's not like we don't have examples around the world of what can -- and will -- happen if we lax our social isolation strategy. Italy, Spain, even the US are all in the "future" compared to Brazil in terms of disease progression. It's all there for all to see. Bolsonaro do not have a healthy respect for the invisible enemy that can be incredibly aggressive and unpredictable.

Nobody's asking Bolsonaro to think either. There are loads of smart, knowledgeable and competent people doing the thinking, researching and discovering for less...capable...leaders. But fucking hell, he should back off and let better people take the reins. This is a war Brazil is going to lose with Bolsonaro at the helm. I am certain of it.

There are two enemies in this war: the virus itself and human imbecility. People like Trump and Bolsonaro, and a host of other nation's leaders, are part of the problem, not the solution.

Bunch of Covidiots, all of them.

I believe that you are justified in being livid about the situation, Silver.

We both have leaders who are less than competent to do the job that the electorate expected them to do.  We have an abundance of   gullible people who swallow the promises that aspiring politicians make.  We do vote con men into office.

People who vote the con man into office refuse to accept that they have made a mistake. That is the part that is so unfortunate.  We do not like to admit that we have made a faulty dumb ass decision when we were at the voting booth.  My country has millions of people who know damned well that we have elected a leader who is corrupt, dishonest, and hopelessly narcissistic.  Almost all of those people stand ready to defend their decision, some even to the extent of violence.

I see Bolsonaro is also championing ending isolation and other precautions to save the economy.  As if the economy isn't going to take a massive hit anyway if millions die.  Have they determined yet if he is positive or negative for Covid-19?

His son had said earlier that Bolsonaro had tested positive, but then this was later denied. It's odd though, I think it was 23 people who were in the same committee as Bolsonaro when he recently went to the US to lick Trump's balls had tested positive for the virus. And yet Bolsonaro didn't? :notsure:

I'm not sure if he's lying, but don't really care. Though I'm kind of hoping he gets sick very soon.

Yesterday night the Turd went on national television again to make a statement. As has become custom, whenever he does people bang pots and pans at their windows and shout 'Bolsonaro Out!'

My mother really got into it last night. As soon as the pots and pans were heard outside she heard the calling, went to the kitchen with a clenched jaw and tight lip to get an aluminum pot and a large spoon. She went to the balcony and started pounding the pot with the spoon, yelling 'FORA!' (Out)

'FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORA!' Bang Bang Bang Bang 'FOOOOOOOOOOOOOORA!'

Then she would come back inside, look at the TV, spit out 'Son of a bitch!' and go outside again to resume hitting the pot with everything she had.

 :picard facepalm:

I applaud her enthusiasm but now my ears really hurt.

in my opinion, the best thing that could happen to the united states would be for donald trump to catch the disease and be put on a respirator. not to die-- pence would take over either way-- but to be sedated and struggling as a means of alerting the country to the problem that we're facing and the incompetence of the political philosophy which allowed it to get so far so early.

donald trump is unimportant in the long term. as many have said, he's not the cause of what is wrong in the united states, he's a symptom.

I have sympathy for xSp and the plight of her country that endures a psychopathic leader.

I have some sympathy for me also.  I have a psychopathic leader as well.  My leader has taken to the airwaves daily,  to deliver word salad bullshit.  Because we are confined to our shelter in place existence, we are daily exposed to The Donald's interminably bleating public briefings.

I am desperately trying to remember the correct words for a Hispanic saying that I learned in my youth..................Yamo e yamo e yo no sey nada..............I need much help with this' Mags. Please write it correctly so that I can get it right

"En boca cerrado, entran nos moscas"- no flies enter a closed mouth.  ;D

In the chumps' case, I expect the flies to exit when he opens his mouth. It's an outfall of having shit for brains.

Yes, Icarus. Both our countries could do without such people at the helm. They will cause unnecessary damage atop the damage the virus itself will bring to the population, economy, etc...

Yesterday the Brazilian Minister of Health was being interviewed on national TV and when asked about the actions of the President, who goes out onto the streets every day and touches his brain-dead minions who gather round him for selfies, possibly spreading the virus, the Minister tried to protect the President by saying that he was not the enemy. The real enemy is the new coronavirus.

:wtf:

The Minister seems to be lacking the backbone to bite the hand that feeds him. Of course the President also the enemy! And if Trump is anything similar he's also the enemy of the US. I don't know about the States, but having leaders like that is one of the things that will weaken our outcome in this 'war'. We have to fight on two fucking fronts, not just against the damage the virus will cause, but against morons as well.

I don't know what Bolsonaro thinks he'll get out of sowing chaos. But it scares me. Stupidity has always been scary.

Welp, Bolsonaro will be firing the Minister of Health this week because

a) The Minister has way more popular support than him. A megalomaniac just can't have being outshone (about 70% vs. 30%).
b) The Minister (who is a science-orientated medical doctor) is not aligned with his idea of having businesses open again and people return to their normal lives. Bolsonaro saying inane stuff like "let just the elderly stay at home" shows a complete lack of understanding on how viral infections work.

I'm waiting to see how this plays out, and hoping it's going to be Bolsonaro shooting himself in the foot. The opposition are calling for him to be tried in the International Court for crimes against humanity, but the opposition are incredibly weak.

I'm hoping something good comes of this, but am braced for the worst.

Bolsonaro is taking his first steps towards military dictatorship. I only hope those who have the power to remove him, do so.

What is he doing?

Where do I start?  :banging head:

I could start with the baby steps Bolsonaro took during his election campaign but that would be going back too far for now.

Likewise, I could start with the insidious placement of military personnel in important and strategic government positions, but that's been going on for quite a while now. The sleepy Brazilian population let that happen, now the government is full of high-ranking military men. Coupled with slowly militarizing the government, Bolsonaro recently participated in a pro-military intervention, anti-democracy rally which really raised eyebrows and resulted in a judicial and political slap on the wrist for Bolsonaro. He was taking more confident strides, then.

Here are some pics of the pro-Bolsonaro rally:

AI-5: Institutional Act Number 5 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institutional_Act_Number_Five).

Quote
The immediate consequences of the AI-5 were:

The President of the Republic was given authority to order the National Congress and the State Legislative Assemblies into forced recess.  This Unclassified document shows how AI-5 forced Municipal Councils to recess. This document, which was declassified, discusses how a powerful military General thought that the Congress being closed was a "blessing." Costa e Silva used this power almost as soon as AI-5 was signed, resulting in the closure of the National Congress and all state legislatures except that of São Paulo for almost a year. The power to order the National Congress into recess would be used again in 1977.
The assumption by the President of the Republic and the Governors of the States, during the periods of forced recess of the federal and state Legislatures, respectively, of the fullness of the legislative power, enabling the President and the Governors to legislate by decrees with the same force and effect as statutes passed by the legislative Chambers. This power included the power to legislate constitutional amendments. A sweeping amendment of Brazil's 1967 Constitution (already adopted under the Military Regime) was promulgated in 1969 (Constitutional Amendment number 1, also known as the 1969 Constitution, because the entire altered and consolidated text of the Constitution was re-published as part of the Amendment), under the authority transferred to the Executive Branch by the AI-5.
    the permission for the federal government, under the pretext of "national security", to intervene in states and municipalities, suspending the local authorities and appointing federal interventors to run the states and the municipalities;
    the preliminary censorship of music, films, theater and television (a work could be censored if it was understood as subverting the political and moral values) and the censorship of the press and of other means of mass communication;
    the illegality of political meetings not authorized by the police;
the suspension of habeas corpus for crimes of political motivation.
the assumption by the President of the Republic of the power of sacking summarily any public servant, including elected political officers and judges, if they were found to be subversive or un-cooperative with the regime. This power was widely used to vacate the seats of Opposition members in the Legislative branch, so that elections would be held as usual, but the composition of the Legislature resulting from the elections would be dramatically changed by the deprivation of office of Opposition legislators, effectively transforming the Federal, State and even municipal legislatures in rubber-stamp bodies. The deprivation of office of Opposition legislators also affected the makeup of the Electoral College of the President of the Republic (under the 1967 and 1969 Constitutions, adopted under the military regime, the President was chosen by an Electoral College made up of the entire National Congress, and of delegates chosen by the State Assemblies). Thus, not only elections for the Executive Branch were indirect, but the vacancies created in the composition of the Legislative bodies affected the makeup of the Electoral College, so that it also became a rubber-stamp body of the military regime.
By passing AI-5 the dictatorship could take away anyone's political rights for up to ten years, and put the death penalty back into effect
the instant legitimacy of certain types of decrees issued by the President, that were made not liable to judicial review. Under those provisions, the Institutional Acts themselves, and any action based on an Institutional Act (such as a decree suspending political rights or removing someone from office), were not subject to judicial review.

Notice how these banners are basically the same colour/fabric? In pics of the rally they are spread out. To me this suggests Bolsonaro's cronies placed them there.

To be continued...

But anyway...

I'll focus on the leap he took which shook Brazil this morning.

The Minister of Justice, Sérgio Moro, quit and in an address to the nation (which Bolsonaro most likely did not green-light), he accused Bolsonaro of firing the chief of the Federal Police in order to place an Intelligence officer who he controls. This is very serious as a democracy requires that institutions such as the Federal Police have autonomy to do their work. Why would he do that? According to Moro, Bolsonaro removed the chief so he can control investigations into organised crime schemes, which the president's sons are involved. According to Moro, they forged his signature in an official document in which the removal was announced and made official. Also according to Moro, he was promised a "carte blanche" to appoint whomever he wanted when he accepted the position of Minister of Justice (the Federal Police are under the Minister of Justice) and Bolsonaro went back on that promise.

(On that last point, it's very naive of Moro to think a corrupt politician would keep their promises, but that's beyond the point.)

What's important is that the Bolsonaro clan are a mafia. What I want to know is why the Bolsonaros aren't spouting one of their slogans anymore, namely "A good criminal is a dead criminal", while waving their hands making silly firing gun signs.

The Trumplets Donny Jr, Ivanka, & co. will have to up their game if they want to compete with the spawn of Bolosonaro:

"Bolsonaro in fresh crisis over son's alleged links to fake news racket" | The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/26/bolsonaro-in-fresh-crisis-over-sons-alleged-links-to-fake-news-racket)

The political storm engulfing Brazil’s far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, has intensified with reports that federal police investigators have identified his son as one of the alleged key members of a “criminal fake news racket” engaged in threatening and defaming Brazilian authorities.

One of Brazil’s top newspapers, the Folha de São Paulo, claimed an investigation by Brazil’s equivalent to the FBI had homed in on Carlos Bolsonaro, the president’s social-media-savvy son.

Carlos Bolsonaro, 37, rejected the claims as “garbage” and “a joke” on Twitter, where he has 1.7 million followers.

But the allegations will deepen the crisis consuming Bolsonaro’s 16-month-old government and further distract from the country’s efforts to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 4,000 Brazilians.

I agree. I've read a few of his ramblings and they always confuse me. He tries to sound intelligent, and maybe he comes across that way to his voters, but not to me.

I think he is jealous of Obama's eight year run at the White House. Maybe he realizes that his term is about to end possibly and he's trying to somehow put Mr. Obama's person to make him seem like the better president.

An article in Scientific American magazine examines the concept of "dark core" behavior.  Some people are wired to be assholes but the article does not use that word. There is what the investigators are calling the D factor . It describes certain behavioral habits that are typically displayed by said assholes.  In no case have they named names but the descriptions of the various quirks describe our glorious leader with certainty.

It is an easy read and even has a simple assessment test that you can take for yourselves.

The only thing I have is that I have some agreement with #3, but it's more on the order of people pulling shit and getting popped for it. If they haven't pulled shit on the people around them, then I would say no. I worked with many people who exhibited these traits. I was more interested in the progress of science or the successful completion of a project, and these traits seem to stand in the way of that.
