Title: Hello all
Post by: texasatheist on April 23, 2012, 09:50:43 PM

Hello everyone,

You can probably tell from my name what my story is but a quick recap to get you all up to speed.  I was raised Baptist, fundie, literalist, and all of those together.  I always questioned, then skeptical about various parts and forms (why KJV over NAB etc) of the bible but I never gave up the faith.  Well until sometime in 2006 when I was watching Bullshit by Penn and Teller on the bible.  My mother was a christian missionary to Jews and knew the culture backwards and forwards, except the part about being polytheistic before the Roman Caesar convinced them that there was only one god.  Then they magically went to one god.  Strange what part of history is going to trigger your brain into realizing there's some serious disparagement going on.  Voila.

It's the tiniest things that can trigger skepticism, and I feel better for it.  Anyway, hello again and I look forward to being a part of the forums.

Welcome!

There seems to be a lot of Texans here compared to people from the other states in the U.S. :) Any idea why that is?

I don't know how that's even possible xSilverPhinx, I don't run into non-believers very often.  Maybe we're all lonely and have to jump on the forums to talk to like minded people where it's not as important for someone in less religious areas.

Oddly enough I love the state.  Perhaps it's Helsinki Syndrome.

LOL well, yes... From Urban Dictionary:

Helsinki Syndrome    58 up, 7 down

A mental condition where the afflicted person is unable to distinguish between the countries of Sweden and Finland, despite the two being distinct from each other. This condition is usually a symptom of a lack of general geographic awareness.

This condition usually manifests itself when the sufferer attempts to convey the concept of Stockholm syndrome to others.
From the news channel in Die Hard:
Gail Wallens: Dr. Hasseldorf, what can we expect in the next few hours?
Dr. Hasseldorf: Well, Gail, by this time the hostages should be going through the early stages of the Helsinki Syndrome.
Harvey Johnson: As in Helsinki, Sweden.
Dr. Hasseldorf: Finland.

From Top Gear:
Richard Hammond: I finally understand what they mean by that, is it Helsinki syndrome, when people are being kidnapped, when they're released, miss their kidnappers.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I am not sure it is a state to state thing. People in Texas tend to be bold so maybe they just have the confidence to come out and say it.  I know a hell of a lot of atheists from IL, but none of them are on here or any other atheist sites.

Man, there are a lot of new members lately!  Maybe it's the warm weather bringing Texans indoors where the A/C is, leaving them little to do but goof off on the computer.  Welcome!
