Title: What kind of coffee do you like?
Post by: Asherah on April 16, 2012, 04:52:52 PM
Sometimes, I think I like Starbucks. But, why is it that sometimes Starbucks coffee....just a plain ole cup a joe......tastes great, but most of the time it really sucks. I keep getting Starbucks coffee thinking that it's going to be good. I put it in the french press and when it's done, I think, this is going to be good, but it tastes burnt and bitter. But, sometimes I make it (maybe 10% of the time) and it tastes great. I must really suck at making coffee. I need to bring it down to a science so that it tastes good every time. But, come to think of it, I have the same thing happen when I go into a Starbucks. The coffee is sometimes good, sometimes bad.

What kind of coffee do you all like and why?

Anything sweet and vanilla.  ;D

I like medium roast coffee - but if I go to a coffee shop, I usually get a latte. I do find that there is a HUGE variance in how good lattes are. Some places always make them taste "burnt" (Second Cup is notorious). Starbucks is usually pretty good, but I don't know what they do that's different. The best latte I ever had was in a really small cafe in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. It was perfectly creamy and coffee-ish and delicious.

Tim Horton's coffee is vile. I'm pretty sure the people who drink it don't even really like it because most people have to put a ton of sugar and cream in it to make it palatable. McDonald's coffee is surprisingly good.

I hate Starbucks.  I don't think it's you; when I get a cup of Starbucks coffee at an actual Starbucks store, it still tastes burnt and terrible, and you would think they would know how to make it if anyone would.

We got a Kuerig in January for DH's birthday.  I always had a kind of moral objection to them because they are so wasteful (a seperate little plastic cup for each cup of coffee?  :o)  Except then I tried it, and now I freaking love it.  Each cup of coffee, fresh, and perfect, and possible to have different flavors with each cup of coffee.  Loves!  So that's one of my guilty pleasures.  I try not to think about all of those plastic cups floating in that trash island in the middle of the ocean.

Right now, I'm into Green Mountain Coffee's Island Coconut coffee.

We got a 'Nespresso' machine a while back at home. Never had a bad cup of coffee from it. I have to drink decaf these days because my ticker doesn't seem to like lots of caffeine. However, Nespresso do a good selection of decaf.

Occasionally I'll treat myself to a Starbucks caramel machiato. I think they're OK over here - maybe your baristas aren't up to it? Or maybe I'm not so discerning.

We bought one of those Keurig machines too.  The spouse said it would mean the end of $7.00 cups of coffee...uh, no.  She says she loves the coffee, but the allure of having coffee out is still strong.  I slightly understand though.  I relate this to my love of fountain soda vs. canned/bottled soda.  The taste of fountain sodas is vastly superior over canned/bottled.  The difference is, I can have a fountain soda for just over a buck.

Whatever is most convenient when I want a coffee and doesn't mean waiting in line for a black americano or espresso, though I will never go to Pret as that always tastes burnt. I have been thinking about getting a nespresso machine for a while as they do a damn good cup of coffee. My only problem with Starbucks is the staff are far too happy.

Earl Grey, hot, no lemon or milk  ;D

But DJ is right when she says McDonalds coffee is pretty good.

I like a strong roast in a pot like this.

Maybe its because I have always bought cheap moka pots but I always get a nasty metallic taste when I have used them.

Fortunately I've never had that problem. I never wash the inside of the boiling pot and it has a solid patina of aluminium oxide, and I only ever wipe over the inside of the coffee pot so that may help.

I [love[/i] our Keurig. I use it every morning. Since I drink a lot of tea as well, I'll run it without a cup in it just for hot water, then put the tea bag in.

When I drink coffee, I usually get iced coffee from Starbucks.  Normally I drink hot tea.  Yes, I know I'm strange - an American who likes her coffee iced and her tea hot.   ;D

I like iced coffee and hot tea too.  :)  Iced coffee is much more refreshing than hot, although I do like a cup (or 3) of hot coffee to wake me up in the morning.

So far my fav coffee is Starbucks dark Sumatra. I use a coffee press to make it.  I like dark coffees like I like my beers. They have more flavour.

Anything from a diner or a deli store.

My favorite kinds: Vietnamese, Arabian, and Columbian.
I want to try coffee from every part of the world! :)

This made me think of Vietnamese iced coffee!  :D  The only place I've ever had it is a local coffee shop called the Hartford Coffee Company.  Great place, just a bit far out of my way.  However, when I'm close enough, I do try to stop in for one - as long as it's not too late in the day.

I just like coffee.  At home we grind beans and filter it.  It does my head in when I have to buy a coffee - generally at the airport -  and they ask 'Would you like latte or americano or cappucino or espresso ... blah blah...'  I generally reply 'sorry, I no spikka Italiano.  Can't I just have a cup of coffee?'  But these kids genuinely don't know what I mean.

Ah, the trials of being an old git.  :(

New England breakfast blend or Dunkin Doughnuts in a French Press make a pretty good work-a-day cup.  Cheap too.

I hear ya. And I used to live in Italy!

I learned to make and drink coffee while sitting night shifts in the military. I use a regular filter machine and make it hot, dark and strong enough to pin Hulk Hogan.
The only thing I ever put in coffee is booze.

Yes~ their iced coffees are great too. :)

I sadly have to go near chinatown, which is super far from me to get my vietnamese coffee fix. I might give in and just buy the special coffee machines to make it myself.

Half coffee and half moonshine?!?  Holy moly, you Viking types don't play around, do you?

Ninety-nine percent of the time, I drink my coffee black, sometimes with a sprinkle of straight cinnamon.

At home, I make coffee in an old percolator, similar to the thing Tank posted a picture of on the first page.

Getting a coffee while out and about, I like Starbucks, whatever the dark roast is. It's never tasted burnt at the one I usually go to.

Completely at odds with the above, I also like the super weak graham-crackery-tasting stuff they serve at some diners. One of the most comforting tastes in the world.

me too, best coffee I've ever had was a few ristretti in La Tazza D'Oro in Rome. Mind you, it probably helped that it's bang next to the Pantheon and is still done out in supercool 1970s decor
