Title: I have a WWII German helmet shell for sale
Post by: Gawen on April 16, 2012, 01:23:30 AM
Honestly, I'm not sure this is permitted. I can't remember anyone selling anything on the forums here. So I reckon I'll be the first to find out?

Original M40 helmet shell made by EmaillierWerke Germany. Size 64. No dings or dents but some pitting. Surface rust removed and sprayed with primer for reenactor consideration. The original paint was nearly eaten away by rust anyway. Best offer considered.

If anyone here is a collector or reenactor or knows someone that is/does or just wants a piece of history, send 'em my way. I'm asking $150.00 plus the cost of shipping. If someone here is in any way connected with the sale of this helmet at full asking price, I'll knock off $25.00 for helping me find a buyer.

Reconditioned helmets can go for $300 and up. Spanish and other country reproductions go for $80.00.

I might have been interested, but german military hardware is, for obvious reasons,  not that rare here in Norway.

I don't see why we shouldn't allow this. It's a very interesting piece. I can't use it, but it should be able to sell pretty easily.

Gawen is obviously a drive-by spammer! who joined two year ago and then contributed 1371 posts to this community before unleashing his diabolical sales pitch.
Well played marketing genius. Well played.

But seriously, cool helmet!

P.S. One of the forums I used to frequent had a Buy&Sell forum (actually, I was the moderator of area for a time). I don't know how practical it would be, but maybe there could be a HAF Buy&Sell?

You would be surprised how much a helmet with half the paint gone but has a good liner in it sells for here. I've see SS helmets go for more than $3000.00.

I found it about 20 years ago at a garage sale. The old woman said her husband brought it home from the war. And no, those are holes (four of them) for rivets to go through to hold the liner in place.

It would take 2 minutes to create. What were your experiences of its use? Do we have enough active members to make it worthwhile in your opinion?

You'd have nothing to lose. It would be just a very slow moving 'for sale' and 'wanted' forum. Would it cost the discussion board more to have it?

Hmmm. Well, we do seem to be getting an influx of new members! The forum I used to moderate was a local Newfoundland forum, so it had the benefit of most of the membership being in the same city. It worked more like a Kijiji than an Ebay. But we had a pretty good system of rules that kept it functional (people weren't allowed to have "discussions" per say - so it kept people from complaining that something was a 'rip off'). The membership here is about a 1000 times more civilized than the one I used to moderate (think 1,500 teenagers, many of which who knew other in real life), so that would be a plus.

The biggest problem I could see would be conflict resolution. If you agree to pick something up in the city you live in, it's not a big deal if you flake out on the deal. If someone pays for something  to get shipped, but the shipper flakes out, I don't know how we could resolve that. It could be something worth trying to figure out, though. It'd be kind of neat to have a venue where we could support HAFers.

I don't know if having a buy/sell section of the forum is a good idea. Do we even know that it would be used? I will probably use it from time to time. Another thing that would concern me is spambots. I mean, that just inviting them in. We could try it and see how it works though.

It wouldn't cost anything in terms of site traffic or size. I don't know if there are any legal or hosting rules that offering items for sale/barter would infringe.

You may well have a point with the spammers, we get too many of them already. If we did this I would not expect it to be in the Getting To Know you area so the member would still have to make their 10 posts.

True. You also make a good point about buyer's beware. Maybe we can put the new forum at the bottom and put a 50 post limit on it, instead of ten?

For reference, here is the list of rules from the forum I mentioned:

QuoteEach user is allowed only one active thread at a time

-All exchanges must be legal:
No drugs.
No stolen goods.
No pirated items (games/movies, software).
No scalped tickets (price must be included in the thread).
No WOW accounts: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/legal/termsofuse.html You don't own your account, Blizzard does.
No Steam accounts (unless you are an authorized reseller): http://store.steampowered.com/subscriber_agreement/ Unless you are an authorized reseller, you do not own your account, Steam does.

-No weapons:
This includes but isn't limited to knives, swords, bb guns, hunting rifles.
Paintball guns and gear are allowed.
If you think something falls into a gray area, pm the forum moderator.

-If it's not yet in your possession, wait to post it. eg: Items you bought through ebay that haven't arrived yet.

-Don't advertise your business or anything else. Should you like to do this, permission is required from an administrator, or the forum moderator.

-If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all:
No slander against users.
No "buyer beware" type posts, and should they occur, they are to be reported.
No posts which are clearly an attempt to derail a thread/cause a shitstorm.
If you think an item is overpriced, don't buy it.

-Label your thread: WTB = Want to Buy; FS = For Sale; WTT = Want to Trade
eg: WTB Nintendo Wii; FS 3G Apple Iphone

-Explain the item in your first post in your thread:
Your title can be simple (eg: FS Dell Laptop), but within the thread should contain any and all details you can about the item (eg: make/model, specs, new/used, color, year it's made, operating system). Pictures of your item(s) are encouraged, and should be made available in your thread rather than by request.

-Any discussion should be kept on topic, and to a minimum.
Do not post joke threads, or respond to a thread with a joke that is irrelevant to the topic.

-Don't post your item(s) in someone elses thread

-One (active) thread per user.
You can post as many items as you would like in this thread.
This also means that all items whether being bought or sold must go in one thread, you are not allowed one thread for buying and one for selling.

-Do not bump your thread more than once a day.
Only bump your thread if it hasn't been replied to in the last 24 hours.
Don't have other people bump your thread (it is the same as bumping it yourself).
Don't bump someone else's thread in an attempt to have it locked.

-Wait atleast 2 weeks to repost your thread. If your thread has been locked, do not repost it. Instead, message the forum moderator, or post it in the Public Complaints Commission sub-forum.

-Check to see if the item you are selling has it's own stickied thread:
Textbooks have their own thread.
Event tickets have their own thread.
Grad dresses have their own thread.
Pets have their own thread.

-Do not post your thread in all caps. Obviously certain words/abbreviations can be all caps (eg. WTB, DVD, FS)

-Do not try to circumvent a FSB or other punishment.

-The rules are your first warning for this forum. Should the rules change, it will be noted in the title.

I think we could also make it invisible till 10 or 50 posts so potential abusers would not even be aware of a 'trading' area until after 10 or 50 posts.

I guess that works. I just worry that seeing the Sales forum will excite the spammers. The reason I put 50 posts is because it would be easy for a spammer to get ten legit posts and then post in that forum.

I think we did allow it - I remember people selling guinea pigs with their cages and gear and that sort of thing. I think as long as someone wasn't trying to run a professional "business" out of selling animals (like running a puppy mill), we thought it was okay.

The trade part interests me as we have so many members from different parts of the world.  Would be fun to trade local stuff with each other.  Of course then we would have to figure out  customs rules.  For example, the first thing I thought of to send someone from Denver is a jar of 5280 salsa (best salsa ever, and made here in Denver - Hubby used to teach the owner and maker's daughter in one of his English classes.)  But don't know what the rules are for sending food to someone in a different country.  Packaging would also be a consideration.

If anyone wants any Denver Broncos (or Denver Nuggets, Colorado Rockies, or Colorado Avalanche) gear, I'm all over  it.

A major photography forum I'm a member on has a "For Sale" section that is not available to members until they meet a time and post number requirement. In the case of that forum, it's 6 months and 300 posts. That's a big number and some people don't like it, but it has been a lifesaver in terms of making transactions smooth and relatively safe from those who would rip off others.

I think if we did that here, that a time and post count model is a good way to go too. Not as stringent as the one I mentioned maybe, but still stringent.

I should have got my daughter to pick up some Indian Ocean water while she was in the west.

I have some Indian Ocean water, special price for HAFers, can't last at this price.
Plenty of Tasman Sea in stock, can supply in bulk.

I would say yes to this I have some good quality films based camera gear that I could offer.

But if y'all see a value then knock yourselves out...

I did that once.Knock myself out, I mean.
Accident. Not very fun.

Practiced reverse kicks against a sandbag. It caught me on the backswing.

OK, so you've discussed the technical issues of a selling area, but what I don't get is... why?

Just a thought...
So the question to the members is 'Would you use a trading section to buy and/or sell something in the next 12 months?'

I would say yes to this I have some good quality films based camera gear that I could offer.

I dont think I'd use it - there're more effective ways to redistribute my junk.

But if y'all see a value then knock yourselves out...

It's not like it would be mandatory or anything, just available for those who might find it useful. It's actually a very efficient way to redistribute junk.

;)

I think it's a fun way to redistribute junk.  Again, especially since our members are so far flung, I think it would be cool to get little souveniers from different parts of the world (and would be happy to supply same from my part of the world.)  I'm not really picturing sending people my old worn out junk (unless they really want it) so much as just different pieces of Americana that they might want, and getting things from Australia, Great Britain, Finland, Norway, et cetera in return.

A book exchange might also be fun.

Oh, and mixed CDs.
