Title: Trust pushes for open access to research
Post by: Tank on April 12, 2012, 08:37:59 AM
Trust pushes for open access to research (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17668722)

QuoteOne of the world's largest research charities, the Wellcome Trust, is to support efforts by scientists to make their work freely available for all.

The Trust is to establish a free, online publication to compete with established academic journals.

They say their new title could be a "game changer" forcing other publishing houses to increase free access.

More than 9,000 scientists are boycotting a leading paid-for publisher for restricting access to their papers...
An interesting development that could see the likes of us have access to tons of high quality information that we would have to pay a fortune for is we subscribed to all journals.

I like it!

It's so frustrating, when you're doing research, to find a really interesting abstract but to be denied access to the actual article/journal/study that it's attached to :(

Agreed!  I would love it if we had free access to the actual studies.  The only problem I can foresee is maybe they will have less funding money to actually do studies if they don't charge for access to read them?

All the research is already paid for. The journals used to provide the 'route to market' for the research. Now the Internet provides a cheaper alternative. The main issue is keeping the quality of peer review up, and that does cost money.

Agreed we need to keep up peer review. Otherwise we will be flooded with papers "proving" the existence of God or about how levitating Space Aliens built the pyramids. but, it would be nice to have cheaper access to more good science.

I have access to journals through my university's proxy server...I just have to figure out how to install it properly, I tried but soon ran out of patience.

If you have one in particular you want let me know, I just can't guarantee that I'll be quick about it.  :P

I think I'm against this if forced to take a stand... But then, someone has to be, eh?  :P
