Title: What old movies do you like.
Post by: ThinkAnarchy on April 10, 2012, 09:01:44 AM
It's sometimes difficult to find old movies since a lot of them have flown under the radar. By old, let's say 1970's or earlier. My personal favorites are:

1. What did you do in the War Daddy
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061176/
It's one of the most underrated movies in my opinion, and I don't understand the distain directed towards it.

2. Some Like It Hot
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053291/
I would imagine most people have seen this movie already, but it is one of my all time favorites.

3. Bringing up Baby
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0029947/

4. Arsenic and Old Lace
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036613/
I like Cary Grant and Frank Capra, what can I say.

I know I'm forgetting a bunch, but I watch mostly comedies from the earlier era's.

Added:

5. Kelly's Hero's
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065938/

This one is right at the cut off, but I have to list it.

Edit: Bolded what I consider old.  ;)

How old is old?
I like the Hitchcock movies with Cary Grant (North by Northwest) and Jimmy Stewart (Rear Window).
I mentioned Becket in a movie thread.
The Good The Bad and The Ugly.
Pink Panther.
The original Cape Fear.
In the Heat of the Night.

I prefer Sci-Fi, and the better CGI, the more I like it. There are a couple of old WW2 movies I kind of like though.

Any of the Marx Brothers films.

Aah, Kelly's Heroes. I really like the tank commander, his just so enjoyable nuts ;D

Other then that, most of the old Clint Eastwood films, some of the John Wayne films (Rio Bravo, El  Dorado, Fort Apache) and maybe some old war movies that I can't remember right now. I suppose I also have to admit that I also like some of the Errol Flynn movies.

And although not a movie, I have to mention the Shõgun mini-tv series.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080274/

But here's also a few old Finnish that really like:

Sadan miekan mies ("Man of a hundred swords", or something along those lines)
Very Errol Flynn type movie, during the 30 Year War in Finland. You get your usual rapier swinging scenes (that are actually well done), romance and all conquering hero and of course a very devious villain (who's planning to bring the Kingdom of Sweden-Finland, a Protestant country, back to the folds of the Roman-Catholic Church)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0127265/

Sven Tuuva
A film that is based around one of the most iconic characters from Johan Ludvig Runeberg's poem collection "The Tales of Ensign Stål". The Tales center are about the War of Finland (1808-09), or Finnish War, between Sweden-Finland and the Russian Empire. Sven, a slow witted farmers son, recruits in to the army and serves in his rather unique ways, until the Battle of Koljonvirta (an actual historical battle).
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0124152/

Tuntematon Sotilas (The Unknown Soldier)
Perhaps the best known war film in Finland (we have to sit through it every Independence day...not that I'm complaining, though ;) ), it is about a Machine-gun Company that served during the Continuation War (1941-44).
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048752/

I also like the Inspector Palmu movies...

Hmmm... off the top of my head:

"M" with Peter Lorre

"Silent Running" with Bruce Dern

"Brazil!"

"Being There" with Peter Sellers

"Dr. Strangelove" (also Sellers)

... etc...

I forgot about Clint Eastwood. That is an exception to my preference for older comedies.

I have a secret.  I love old Westerns.  I used to watch them with my grandparents as a kid.  So, from that list:

The Outlaw Josey Wales
The Wild Bunch
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Cat Ballou

I also love the original Parent Trap, and the original Ugly Dachshsund.

Remind me never to share any secrets with you. You can't even keep your own secrets to yourself. My grandpa was a fan of Western's as well. They bring back fond memories.

Haha, this is entirely true.  I definitely recommend that you never tell me a secret.  My eyes will go all big and I'll fidget and smile nervously until you finally break down and let me tell someone.

I also love the original Parent Trap,

My daughter loved that, at least two versions of it.
I would have seen them more than once, lost count of how many times I've heard them.

4. Arsenic and Old Lace

I like Cary Grant and Frank Capra, what can I say.

That was going to be my #1.  I also love A New Leaf, The Isle of the Dead (not what it sounds like, but it does star Boris Karloff), Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, 12 Angry Men, The Uninvited (the real one, with Ray Milland).  I could probably go on but I'd be here forever.

I can't remember if I have ever seen Mr. Blanding Builds His Dream House. I will have to ask the wife, regardless I will probably watch again or for once very soon.

By the way, netflix sucks. They don't have the above movie or a New Leaf streaming. They need to remind me soon why I subscribe to their service.

You love Cary Grant, you'll love this.  Plus Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas, it's pretty much a guaranteed good time.

Well, that saves me the bother of giving them a try.  Thanks!

There mail order selection is fantastic, but if you want only streaming, I think it is a waste of money. They do have Faulty Towers though, which is one of my favorite shows. I actually think they do a better job with tv streaming. I've been watching Psych via netflix recently.

Well, how old do you mean? Some favorites of mine are from the age of the dinosaurs, if you ask my two sons, who are in their mid-twenties, E.G.: Blade Runner, 2001 A Space Odyssey, even my all time fave, Apocalypse Now. Even Star Wars is old by now. I'm a 'boomer', so my more influential movies are from the '60s and '70s. The Birds, Help, Psycho, Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, The Godfather, Two Hundred Motels. More recent 'old' movies that just blew me away: The Deer Hunter, Platoon, Contact. It's always hard for me to cut my favorites lists for movies, albums, etc down to five or ten. But it's always fun to compare notes.

The only "old" movies I can think of off the top of my head is Casablanca and a couple Laurel and Hardy's and Abbot and Costello's and Martin and Lewis.
I like all the Three Stooges shorts. I'm fairly sure the new movie will be a flop (slapstick is so 2000 and late), but I'll go see it anyway.

Some of you mentioned some I like, Dr. Strangelove, Kelly's Heros, etc.

How about
Dr. Zhivago
Lawrence of Arabia
Mary Poppins
The Ten Commandments
The Birds
The sound of Music
Bridge on the River Kwai
Ben Hur
The Searchers
The Blob
The African Queen
High Noon
Shane

If I concentrate on the 60's and 70's, this list would be quite large.
