QuoteTORONTO – The Court of Appeal for Ontario has swept aside some of the country's anti-prostitution laws saying they place unconstitutional restrictions on prostitutes' ability to protect themselves.

The landmark decision means sex workers will be able to hire drivers, bodyguards and support staff and work indoors in organized brothels or "bawdy houses," while "exploitation" by pimps remains illegal.

I'm glad for this! Legalise it and regulate it, I've always said!

I agree, I think this is probably the best way to protect prostitutes from abuse, rape, et cetera, and may also be a good way to better end minors becoming prostitutes.  For example, you don't hear of too many underage strippers because it is in the strip clubs' best interests to follow the law.

Looks like a step in the right direction.

Is that indeed true, that there's less incidents of abuse and rape in countries which legalize prostitution? (I'm not disagreeing, more questioning)  I'd like to see facts to support this before I really say that I favor this.

I'm not sure about rape and abuse in general, but legalizing it is definitively better for those who work in the sex industry. If someone harasses you, you can actually go to the police. You can control your environment and put things in place to make it safer.

This is what I was thinking when I said that.

I love it when common sense prevails.

Good job, Canada. Another step towards protecting human rights. :)

It should be noted that this decision came from the courts (which I still have some faith in) - the Federal Government here, on the other hand, has a very socially conservative agenda.  They just passed a massive crime bill that will create super prisons and institute mandatory minimum sentencing - the latter of which will be challenged in the courts as being unconstitutional - and they're trying to pass an internet surveillance bill that grants special powers to people other than legal investigators to obtain the internet usage information of anyone in the country.

That's the same way Norway got rid of it's censorship of pornography a while back. They took a magazine distruibutor to court for not censoring pics, and the courts ruled it a freedom of press issue.
Just shows that the "evil agendas" of government can be checked by a strong judiciary.
Now if only they will take on Norway's ridiculus prostitution laws....

Makes me want to move to Canada. Not because I want to be or hire a prostitute, but because they're far more progressive than USA. Gay marriage has been legal there for what? 6, 7 years? And now prostitution. I think it's funny that it's illegal here. I mean, our current law says that sex between/among consenting adults is legal, right? Well, what if one of the adults needs a little bit (or a lot) of money in order to grant consent? I mean, we allow all sorts of other criteria to affect a person's decision to consent--such as physical looks, social status, and level of intoxication, just to name a few. What's the difference between "I'll have sex with you of you're hot enough" and "I'll have sex with you if you pay me enough"?
